No, it is not possible. The Core i3 processors go into a totally different socket than the older Core 2 Duo processors. Further, the Core i3 processors support DDR3 memory whereas the chipset supporting the Core 2 Duo processors supported DDR2 memory.
If you want to make the jump to a Core i3 (or better) processors, you will need a new motherboard and new memory (DDR3 or DDR4, depending upon which Core processor generation you choose from), as well as the new processor itself.
