82551IT Driver for Windows Embedded Standard 7

G'Day All,

Simple problem really and just wondering what the solution would be.

- Embedded computer with an Intel 82551IT Ethernet Controller chip in it

- Installed Windows Embedded Standard 7

- Need a driver =)

I found a XP Embedded driver but it did not work under Embedded Standard 7. I've also tried finding a Windows 7 driver for this chip but could not find one.

What would you guys recommend?

Cheers,

John

Hi John:

Welcome to the Intel® Embedded Community.

I checked with Intel people in the know on this topic and I learned that the 82551IT part is quite a few years old and was end-of-life'd before Windows 7 was launched. The driver set has been frozen so I think it is very unlikely you will see a new driver coming from Intel for this part.

Let's see if perhaps someone in the community has come up with something?

Felix

G'Day Felix,

Thanks for the quick response :smileyhappy:

I had a closer look at the page and found where it says it was EOLed. I should have looked closer while I was searching.

I guess we shall just see if the community has something.

You don't have any idea what the current Ethernet Controller that should be used is do you? I am thinking it is probably the http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=33148 http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=33148" rel="nofollow">Intel® 82562V Fast Ethernet PHY as it has an embedded option. The only other one that I saw was http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=38511 http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=38511" rel="nofollow">Intel® 82552V Fast Ethernet PHY but it seems to not be an embedded chip.

Cheers,

John

No worries, John.

I am guessing that you are looking at the Intel "ark" product database. It is pretty reliable.

http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyId=2470. http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyId=2470." target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyId=2470. However the embedded product you point out is a PHY which I don't think is same function as controller.

You might also check out the Gigabit Ethernet family. These are mostly newer produts and come in many flavors. I think some of these can be adapted for 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet.

Are you designing a new system? Maybe if you could say a little bit about your requirements it would be easier to guide you to the right place.

Thanks

Felix

Our company isn't responsible for designing systems anymore we tend to more grab off the shelf embedded computers and install our software. We have been able to source an embedded computer that runs linux and also XP Embedded. The thing is that parts of our software require .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, which is included in Windows Embedded Standard 7. We also thought that since 7 has been out for a while now it would be a good time to adopt this version.

I have since spoken to our supplier of the board and we are going to source a different processor with a different ethernet chip and have a go with that :)

The 82574IT is the modern part that intel's embedded customers are using. It has extremely broad OS support.

It's a gigabit part but you can set a bit in the NVM to make it 10/100 if you like.

Thanks Paul and everybody else. It turns out we can't get a production version of the board that had the old chip on it anyways. The boards we are using have an ethernet controller that works straight out of the box with Windows Embedded Standard 7 :)
