Questions regarding QAT

Hi,

I have installed and configured a Colleto Creek PCI card (DH 8955) in SR-IOV mode.

I was able to run the sample applications within virtual machine over kvm and it works fine.

Following are two questions that I'm trying to figure out. Hopefully someone can help me.

1) It appears that it is not possible to configure the number of VFs on those devices (this is possible for Niantic NICs). How does the multiple hardware engines are shared between virtual machines ? Is there a queuing mechanism that allow some kind of quality of service ? Does the maximum throughput that can achieve a virtual machine is dependent on the number of VFs used by other virtual machines ?

2) A somewhat related question, it seems that in SR-IOV guest mode, the guest is responsible to configure it's access to the hardware accelerator (see /etc/ dh895xcc_qa_dev0.conf). Is there a way for the host to restrict the access to the hardware for a given virtual machine (most likely by means of the VFs) ? In a multi-tenant environment, it might be desirable to provide deterministic throughput/delay to a given virtual machine when concurrent virtual machines are sharing the same device.

Thanks a lot !

Best regards,

/ludovic

Hello Ludovic,

Thank you for contacting the Intel Embedded Community.

In order to better understand your consultations, we would like to address the following questions:

Could you please confirm that the PCI NIC card related to your questions is your design or a third party board? In case that it is a third party one, please give us all the information related to it.

Could you please let us know how many NIC cards are affected? In case that it is your design, also could please tell us know how many cards of this kind have been manufactured?

Could you please confirm if these situations happen with any motherboard or just some ones? In case that it is related to some motherboards, could please provide a list of the boards affected by the cited problems?

Please give us the information that better answer the previous questions to have a clear idea of your previous communication.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best Regards,

Hi Carlos,

The PCI card in question is a genuine Intel product (Coletto Creek).

There are only one card installed currently.

The card is working correctly. But the documentation available doesn't cover my questions.

Thanks,

/ludovic

Hello Ludovic,

Thanks for your reply.

Reviewing the part number http://ark.intel.com/products/80372/Intel-DH8955-PCH DH 8955, it is related to an Intel(R) Communications Chipset. Due to this fact and in order to give the further request information, could you please send us pictures of the NIC card related to your consultations?

By the way, please update your Embedded Design Center (EDC) account to Privileged type. To request an upgrade from your Basic EDC account to a Privileged account, go to http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/embedded/embedded-design-center-support.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/embedded/embedded-design-center-support.html and click on "Manage Your Intel Profile" found in the "Manage Your Account" section of the page. From there you can request an upgrade. After you submit the application, please let me know and I will expedite the review of your application. The application can be found at:

Hi Carlos,

I was able to get in http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/embedded/embedded-design-center-support.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/embedded/embedded-design-center-support.html this morning. I've changed my email address to my business email address, since then I'm getting the error message: "The account profile service is currently unavailable. Please try again later. ".

Thanks,

Hello lbeliveau,

Thanks for your update.

Based on your previous communication, we need to http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-008441.htm identify the NIC card using the info stated on its barcode label, but the provided picture specifically the one that has this label is blurry as you may notice at the following picture:

Due to this fact, Could you please send us a picture of this label or give us the info stated on it?

This information is needed to give you further help.

Thanks again for your help to solve this inconvenience.

Best Regards,
