4965AGN: device cannot start (code 10), but works in Ubuntu

Recently my old 3945ABG card died after 4,5 years of faithful duty, in my Dell Inspiron 1520 which is also out of its warranty period. I replaced this card with a fresh 4965AGN card, upgrading to wireless-N in the process. However, no matter what driver I try under Windows 7 x64, it will not work. Device manager says 'device cannot start (code 10)'. So far I have tried the automatic wireless driver detector from Intel, manually installing a 15.x and a 14.x driver, the latest Intel PROset driver for the 4965AGN provided by Dell, and a Lenovo driver for the 4965AGN; all with the same results.

The event logger reports two error events each time the driver tries to load: 5006 (incorrect version number for this driver) and 5001 (cannot allocate needed network resources). The device ID is PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4230&SUBSYS_11138086&REV_61.

This would all suggest that my card was DOA. However, the strange thing is that the card works flawlessly under Linux Mint as well as Ubuntu. This means it *must* be some kind of driver quirk. Help would be much appreciated, since I do have to use Windows for some tasks... Thanks!

- The OEM may have installed the wireless adapter with a lock to prevent installation of another adapter.

- Your adapter may not be electrically compatible with your laptop that may cause the adapter and/or your laptop to no longer function.
