Intel HD 3000: BSOD while and no more AERO after installing latest driver on Win 7 64

While installing the latest driver (9.17.10.2932) for my Intel HD 3000 graphics on my Windows 7 64 professional system my screen turned black and when I turned my secondary screen on it showed a BSOD (switching graphics driver). I rebooted and started Windows normally and was running the system driver. Second attempt to install seemed successful, but Windows AERO desktop has stopped working since. If I run the Aero troubleshooter it says the Windows Desktop Manager is disabled. When the utility tries to start it the desktop manager crashes immediately.

Same thing happens if I try to calculate the Windows Experience Index:

Both times the Intel dll: igd10umd64.dll is the faulting module. The version is listed as 0.0.0.0.!

When I checked the location C:\Windows\system32\igd10umd64.dll the file was not there.

(Later I manually copied the file from the installer temporary directory to the Windows\System32 dir to no avail)

I have tried to revert back to the latest driver, but the option is greyed out. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver several times resulting in the same BSOD every time I was installing with the Intel driver loaded. I downloaded and installed the older driver from the Intel website but the exact same thing happens. I tried to let Windows find a driver for it and it downloaded the latest version and I still have the Aero problem.

Somewhere in the process I got a hash error on a .sys file, It was before I noticed Windows Aero was not working and I clicked ok and ignored it hoping it would fix itself:

The event: "Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid. The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error.

File Name: \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\drivers\igdkmd64.sys"

Again a Intel dll and again I can't find the file on that location.

Does anybody know what is going on and how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

FYI: I fixed my system by installing the driver (8.15.10.2656) from my system manufacturer's site. In my case Shuttle.

Aero is up and running again!
