Monitor not listed in Device manager/Windows 8 automatically updates driver

Inspiron 15R, Windows 8 64 bit. Intel HD Graphics 4000.

There is no monitor listed in Device Manger. Only the display adapters is listed there.

If I uninstall and delete the graphics driver, I can get the monitor listed in device manager. It's listed as Generic non-PnP monitor.

However, when I restart the PC, the Intel driver automatically reinstalls and the monitor is once again gone from Device Manager.

I have the same problem on another PC but on that one the driver doesn't automatically get reinstalled.

I tried going to devices and printers and disabling automatic installation of drivers but it does nothing.

I tried downloading and installing the driver directly from Intel but the monitor is still not listed in device manager.

Hello John

I understand you are having problems with the Graphics driver.

Please note that the reason why the monitor shows as Generic non-PnP monitor is that there is no monitor driver installed in the system. It is also important to mention that if the driver is being reinstalled after restarting the system, means that the driver is being provided by the operating system. Due to this situation I suggest you installing our latest generic driver from the Intel® website.

You can download it from the following link:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22375&lang=eng&OSVersion=Windows%208%2C%2064-bit*&DownloadType=Drivers http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22375&lang=eng&OSVersion=Windows%208%2C%2064-bit*&DownloadType=Drivers

Please be aware that we provide generic drivers that have not been developed or tested specially for your system. Each motherboard, laptop or Original Equipment Manufacturer can add, remove and change features on the video controllers they implement on their systems. Therefore they provide customized drivers to support such changes. So we always recommend using the latest drivers provided directly by your motherboard or Original Equipment Manufacturer.

I already tried downloading the driver directly from Intel and installing.

The problem is that the MONITOR disappears from DEVICE MANGER when I do that.

Solution options that I see:

1. Somehow prevent monitor from disappearing from device manager when the Intel Graphics driver is installed.

2. If unable to do that, then I prefer to leave it on Generic Monitor (no driver installed) because the monitor will show up in device manager. However I cannot because Windows keeps automatically installing the driver upon restart.

Hello John,

In this case as part of the troubleshooting steps, I suggest you to update the BIOS on your computer to the latest version that Dell provides.

You can download the latest updates from Dell for your system in the following link:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/drivershome/showproductselector http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/drivershome/showproductselector

Another good step is to install the monitor driver so that the monitor shows with the name of it and not Generic non-PnP.

Hi, i installed Windows evolution 8 32bit and i'm having problems with HD Graphic drives; when i select screen resolution options, i only see Generic Non-pnp Monitor and 1024x768Generic (and i can not change);

[i do not know what is HD series cards],

if i do the Windows update it recognizes the problem, download several updates, including HD Graphic drives, and after it restarts, the display keeps flashing and the system does not open.

I'm on it all day, i had to reinstall Win, all this for the system to recognize my projector and also open 'Multiple Monitors' option and others; furthermore, i can not update the Win 8 cause it stops! I saw there are many people with this problem:

Now, i downloaded the HD Graphic drives and for Win 7, and it worked fine, i just can not update the Win 8 then it stops; now, even with Win 7's drive installed and no longer showing the 'HD Graphics drive' between updates, if i install the remaining updates it also crashes; i do not quite know what to test because if it fails Win no longer opens.

Is it the 32bit thing, that Win8 had no hopes with old machines?

Hello ChristianAthayde,

Thanks for the information provided.

Based on the description, it seems your computer is running Intel® HD Graphics. Note that the latest driver we have for this specific controller is for Windows* 7 32/64 bit only.

The reason why you see under device manager Generic Non-pnp Monitor and 1024x768Generic is that there is no Intel® driver installed in the system and the computer is using a generic driver that the operating system provides.

We recommend you downgrading the system to Windows* 7 since these are the latest drivers we can provide for your controller.

In the case you want to continue using Windows* 8, you will need to contact the computer system manufacturer (Samsung) in order to request the Windows* 8 drivers from their side.

From our side, you can download the latest Windows* 7 drivers at the following link:

32 bit version:

64 Bit version:

Hello ChristianAthayde,

Please note that the driver we provided before is the correct driver for your graphics controller.

It is important to mention that the drivers we have are generic drivers for your computer since we provide the hardware to the system manufacturer and they will design and create their own drivers specifically for their systems.

You can try the driver below:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22521&lang=eng&OSVersion=Windows%207%20%2864-bit%29*&DownloadType=Drivers https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22521&lang=eng&OSVersion=Windows%207%20%2864-bit%29*&DownloadType=Drivers

In the case the driver is not working properly in your system, I recommend you contacting Samsung and request the drivers for this computer.
