Intel Xeon E5405: Compatibility with our new system

Hello Everyone

I have tried real hard to find the answer to this question before I resorted to bringing it to your attention. Since I have failed, here goes...

I am purchasing the following system:

http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/tower/5046/SYS-5046A-X.cfm

It has the following motherboard:

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Core2Duo/X58/C7X58.cfm

The above linked page has the following information:

Processor/Cache

CPU

LGA 1366 Socket

Intel® Core™ i7-965 Extreme Edition

Intel® Core™ i7 series

Intel® Xeon® 5500 series

Intel® Xeon® 3500 series

I am intending on purchasing this processor:

http://www.intel.com/buy/server/boxed-processor/embedded.htm?sSKU=BX80574E5405P&fmlid=2

OK. Since CPU has to have the "LGA 1366" socket, and the "Intel® Xeon® 5500" series processor is listed as one of the supported choices of processors, can I assume that the Intel® Xeon® E5405 that I want to purchase is of the required LGA 1366 Socket and will therefore work on our new system?

Your help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

the short answer is Not its never going to be compatible.

Long answer: The E5404 Processor belongs to the E5400 Family of processors which, apart from other things have socket 771.

This motherbaord you showed us supports only the 5500 series and 3500 series which as you mentioned uses socket 1366.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

You have accomplished the following:

1. Now I won't accidentaly open the processor up when it arrives.

2. Because of # 1, I will be able to return it with the greatest of ease

3. I will not be dissapointed when the processor does not work in my system.

Because of your response to my posting, I have ordered this item:

http://www.antonline.com/p_Intel--BX80602E5504--Quad-Core-Xeon-E5504-_589706.htm

Since I messed up last time I tried to order this processor, I would appreciate it if you would critique this item and see if I messed up again. The little bit of reading that I have done leads me to believe that the LGA 1366 socket is also known as Socket B.

Again, PLEASE let me know if I messed up again...

Thank You!

Great processor. i had a chance to try it for a few hours and it sure is fast.

The only thing to keep an eye out for is that this processor has a Slower QPI link to the chipset, does NOT support hyperthreading and does NOT support Turbo Mode.

My personal choice would be the E5520 which support all the features above.
