S1200BTL cpu temp sensor - negative values ?

Hello,

Using Integrated BMC Web Console to connect to S1200BTL BMC. Using latest bios. Cpu is E3-1220L.

At first I was not sure which sensor shows CPU temp - but only one changes according to CPU load - it's "P1 Therm Margin".

Anyway when machine is off it shows -70 C, under load -40C.

Variation seems ok, but starting values are not.

Any comments on this ?

Values are GREAT!

Margin, as in amount remaining to event.

-40 = 40 deg C below therm trip.

Ok so how do I calculate realtime value now ?

I assume:

therm_trip + P1_Therm_Margin = realtime_temp

Where do I get this therm_trip value ?

As per the http://www.intel.com/content/dam/doc/design-guide/xeon-e3-1200-lga1155-socket-specifications-and-guidelines.pdf Thermal and Mechanical Design Guide:

The TCC activation temperature is calibrated on a part-by-part basis... TCC activation temperature may change based on processor stepping, frequency or manufacturing efficiencies.

This means there is no defined TCC for certain model. However, you don't really need to warry about the actual temperature - just keep the Therm_Margin below zero, and the processor should work well.

You can also try a tool like CPUID HWmonitor http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

It will report the core temps on each core.
