60 second latency spike

I am seeing a regular high latency spike every 60 secs on laptop with Intel 5100AGN wireless adaptor (driver version is latest 13.1.1.1), we are trying to run a soft VoIP client and the voice quaility is destroyed during this period. Lots of info on the Internet about this 'wireless 60 second lag problem' and we have confirmed the issue happens when the laptop sends a scan request (probe request) to update wireless networks it can see. The suggested work around for XP is to disable Windows Wireless Zero Config once connectivity is established however this does not stop the problem and there is info out there that suggests wireless adaptors can initiate implicit scans on their own periodically. Anyone know whether the Intel wireless adaptor does this and if so can it be turned off ?? Many thanks.
