Windows 10 (1511) high CPU usage by 'System and compressed memory' process

Hi,

I have a Macbook Pro 15" 2015 with an Intel Core i7-4980HQ and Intel Iris Pro 5200 graphics (discrete IGP only, no Nvidia card).

Under Windows 10 Treshold 2 (v1511) (bootcamp) one of the eight cores is continuously used by the System and compressed memory process when the Intel driver is used for the discrete graphics. When the Intel driver is uninstalled and I revert back to the Microsoft driver the problem goes away.

The problem also happens only when you do a cold start (after shutdown) or reboot. If you put the laptop to sleep or hibernate to problem also goes away. So the workaround for now is not do a reboot or shut down but hibernate or sleep.

I have tested this with the Apple provided drivers for the Iris Pro and the latest drivers from Intel: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25489/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-15-40-4th-Gen- Download Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 [15.40][4th Gen] version 15.40.10.64.4300.

The problem is easily reproducible: uninstall the Intel Iris Pro from device manager and tick "remove driver software" and after a reboot the problem is gone. Reinstall the Intel Graphics Driver and after a reboot the problem is back. So I suspect somewhere along the line there is a conflict between the driver and Windows 10. Since the issue can be solved with sleep or hibernate I'd suspect something with the ACPI driver.

Has anyone else had this problem or contacted Intel about this?

Hello, WimC:

Apple has requested that all questions regarding Apple systems and software be addressed directly with Apple support.

Why? This is to avoid loosing any special feature or settings that could have been added by the OEM in order to work better for you.

Using the generic Intel® drivers could affect you by loosing these special features and settings in your system.

Hi Esteban,

In fact the Apple version of Intel drivers supplied are generic versions of Intel. You can see this for yourself if you https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1837?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US download the latest Bootcamp support software from Apple and unzip it. The driver software has a complete Intel installer including Intel readme.

Furthermore, if you google this problem, Apple's hardware isn't the only one affected. For example in this Reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/3t19ko/why_is_system_and_compressed_memory_using_so_much/cx28n08 https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/3t19ko/why_is_system_and_compressed_memory_using_so_much/cx28n08.

The problem also is that I have to pay to open a support case at Apple which will end up in them contacting you. I'm happy to help but not wiling to pay 29€ to help fix bugs.

So if someone could investigate this from the Intel side already or maybe wake up people at Apple that would be great.

KR,

Wim

Hello, WimC:

Thank you for the information provided.

As per the readme file in the IntelHDGraphics64 folder inside Download Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5769, the driver added is 15.33.18.64.3496 that applies for Microsoft Windows* 7/8/8.1 64-bit

Now, as per the information provided, you have a different driver version, probably the Windows 10* version provided by Apple (20.19.15.4300), so let's try with the latest (at 1/28/2016) driver for Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 5200 for 4th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors (15.40.10.64.4300 from 10/26/2015).

Also, while uninstalling the previous graphics driver, you can select the option "Delete the driver software for this device", to perform a clean installation after restarting the system.

I look forward to your outcome with this.

Tried it with your suggestion, same problem as the guy above.

Also using macbook pro retina late 2013 haswell with IRIS PRO 5200.

Problem started with Apple with this EFI update of their hardware in combination with your intel graphic drivers.

Sleep or Hybernate resets something that fixes it but the problem is almost a year now.

Wondering if it ever will be fixed...

Hello, All:

I found something that could be helpful for you for this situation.

Basically is to playaround with some setting for the memory diagnostic within windows.

Here you can find a screenshot of the settings in a NUC that doesn't have the issue.

You can test different settings with your system to check it's behavior.

I look forward to your outcome with this.

How to find this? Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Task Scheduler Task Scheduler Library->Microsoft->Windows->MemoryDiagnostic

Could I be missing some information regarding your response?

I have that scheduled task but what to do with it? I'm not sure because you only show a screenshot of the task job, not from anything else to check

Hello, PeterDanckaert:

This is to disable the task, and test the behavior of your system.

Disabled both tasks but as expected cpu usage remains again at around 10-12% system and compressed memory. So no change there.

I rather think the intel graphics driver is trying to allocate a specific adres which the EFI update of Macbook is refusing until you put the laptop to sleep or hybernate where then the EFI lets loose of the address reservation or where Windows can correct the EFI error.

I also have this issue on my macbook running Windows 10 with bootcamp.

High cpu usage on 1 core and it's gone with the generic vga driver.

Sometimes it's gone after sleep.

This issue is annoying because it consumes a lot of the battery.

I've done the mentioned fixes, but the issue always remains.

Kind regards,

Thibaut

Hello, Thibaut:

Apparently the best option to go in this scenario would be to use the default drivers from Microsoft*, for further support regarding this, I recommend you to contact Apple directly.

I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro 15" (Retina, mid 2014). It has the graphic card Iris Pro 5200 too. The solution of suspending works but it is not the normal behaviour I expect for this product. I have opened a ticket in Apple Bug Reporter at https://bugreport.apple.com/ https://bugreport.apple.com/.

If you have some news about this issue I would like you to share in this thread. I will do the same.

Thank you
