Blue screen on reboot with SkyLake

My PC can run fine for weeks at a time but when I try to reboot it sometimes causes a blue screen when it tries to come back up. I reported this on the Asus forums and someone mentioned there was a known reboot issue and that Intel was providing replacements. I'm not sure if my issue falls under the issue he was referencing or not. My PC does not randomly reboot (although it did a bit during the first few months but not in a while). My issue seems to be pretty much when I manually reboot from Windows. I'm running Windows 10 64 bit. I have a SkyLake i7-6700 and 32GB ram on an ASUS Z170 Deluxe board. Normally I hold the power button to force it off during the blue screen and then unplug it for a minute then back on and it boots up fine. I tested the ram thoroughly back when it first started happening and it was fine. So just wondering if this fits any currently known issues with the CPU.

Hello DigitalManDan,

Thank you for contacting the Intel community.

We don't have reports of any BSOD with the Skylake processors, the information that is was provided to you at the website you browsed is wrong information.

Do you get any Blue screen error message?

Are there recent changes made on the BIOS, software, or hardware before the issue happened?

Do you have the latest BIOS version?

What is your memory part number?

Try to reboot in save mode and see if you get this problem, when you reboot in save mode Windows starts in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers, if you don't get the BSOD in safe mode most likely the issue is with software and not hardware and you'll know default settings and basic device drivers aren't causing the issue.

Is this system overclocked? Overclock can cause BSOD; make sure you are running your system under the processor specifications; you can see processor specifications here:

You can also try running Windows update and make sure all important updates are installed, make sure all drivers from your motherboard website are install and are up to date, you can download the proper drivers for your system here:

Remove unnecessary applications that you might have installed.

Please run the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool, The purpose of the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool is to verify the functionality of an Intel® Microprocessor. The diagnostic checks for brand identification, verifies the processor operating frequency, tests specific processor features, and performs a stress test on the processor.

At the end to test if the processor is the culprit the best way to do it is to try the processor in another similar system and see if it causes the same issue.

I hope this can help.

Best regards,

Ivan.

Yeah, been happening over the course of 4 or 5 BIOS updates. Have tested everything. Will try the CPU Diagnostic tool from your link above. Thanks.

It hasn't happened again since I posted but was very intermittent to begin with. I did another BIOS update and chipset driver update and all went smoothly this time. So hopefully all good.
