Installing drivers leads to no output on GM45 Video with XP

I have an industrial computer with a built in LCD/touch screen. It attaches via the VGA analog connector. After installing Windows XP and SP2/SP3, I then install the drivers. Chipset first and they work fine. When I install the video drivers, the minute they activate the VGA output stops. There is also no output on the DVI connector. My hope is that it's just erroneously turning on HDMI as the output and a registry setting would fix it, but I have no way of testing HDMI output. Does this sound like a possibility? Does anyone know the registry settings that determine output port. I can get the machine working in VGA only mode after installing, but it has inferior quality to the stock XP drivers so I've removed the drivers by using system restore.
