I have a Dell E520 with an Intel Pentium D 820 as identified by the Intel Processor Identification Utility. It describes the chip as an LGA775 package. What can I upgrade to in order to have the virtualization technology?

My recomendation would be to get something from the E6xxx (e.g E6600) range, these support VT and the Core processors are much cooler running and higher performance than the Pentium D processors.

I bought and installed an E6600 processor (OEM tray) in my Dell E520. I have detected no problems but during the boot sequence I get a message that an unsupported processor was found. Running the Intel Processor Identification tool indicates an unknown processor with the same specifications as the E6600. Could the lack of ID cause the message.

As you say there shouldn't be any issues, typically you'd need a BIOS update to resolve the message, the latest version for your dell is 2.4.0, if you upgrade to this version, there should be the relevent support in the BIOS.
