What is max safe temp of Core i7 2700K

I encode videos virtually all day so I'll be using the CPU at full load constantly. What is the safe max temp in Celsius that I could reach?

The temperature value handled is the TCase value; this is a number established by Intel® as a point of reference in order to understand what could be expected as per normal processor temperature.

Anything from the Tcase and below will be the expected temperature of the processor in normal use, anything that doesn't stress out the processor (watching movies, burning CDs, browsing the internet, creating documents, etc.) When the processor is stressed out meaning that you are running heavy processor applications that take control of the CPU or uses it at 100% the temperature will go beyond the Tcase. It can perfectly reach 80 to 85 degrees and the processor will still be OK. The cooling fan is in charge to keep that temperature there.

If the processor temperature reaches 100 degrees or more it will send a signal to the motherboard to shut down to prevent mayor damages and most likely it will not be possible to turn the computer back in until it cools down.

The normal processor temperature will depend on the chassis type, the hardware involved and the location of the computer, and it usually is lower than the Tcase.

The Tcase value for the Intel® Core™ i7 processor I7- 2700K is 72.6°C. Please confirm this at the following web site: http://ark.intel.com/products/61275/Intel-Core-i7-2700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz http://ark.intel.com/products/61275/Intel-Core-i7-2700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

Hi Intel_Karla,

Thanks for this nice and informative description.

Can you tell me what the Tcase is for the i7-3612QM?

I can only find Tjunction here:

http://ark.intel.com/products/67356/Intel-Core-i7-3612QM-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_10-GHz-rPGA ARK | Intel&# 174; Core™ i7-3612QM Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz) rPGA

My laptop (an ASUS ZENBOOK) is setup to have the fan constantly running, even with low CPU usage, and temp sits around 50°. I've found an application to control the fan (Notebook Fan Control)

http://www.computerbase.de/forum/showthread.php?t=1070494 [Vorstellung] NoteBook FanControl (NBFC) - ComputerBase Forum

And with the fans off, temp reaches 65° before it kicks in again. I'm wondering if that's safe in the long run (I assume it is), because the quiet from the fan being off is definitely appreciated.

Many thanks,

Zingapuro

Zingapuro:

Intel® Processors containing heat spreader usually will refer to Tcase and Intel® Processors without heat spreader (mobile systems) might refer to Tjunction as per the main Thermal Specification.

More information is available in the Datasheet, Vol 1, page 69.

Hi joe_intel,

Thanks for answering my question and sorry for my late reply.

I've tried to use your information to answer my question (is it safe to use Notebook FanControl? or put otherwise, is it safe for the chip to reach 65-70° on a regular basis?) but I'm stil not sure I really get it.

What exactly should I be looking on the Datasheet? I suppose this is the most relevant section:

To allow for the optimal operation and long-term reliability of Intel processor-based systems, the system/processor thermal solution should be designed so that the processor:

- Remains below the maximum junction temperature (Tj,Max) specification at the maximum thermal design power (TDP).

However, I'm still at a loss to determine what is considered a safe CPU temperature for my Ultrabook.

I've recently also started encoding videos and temperature reaches 90° with fans at full speed for as long as the video is encoding - if this is considered safe behaviour, I think it should be no problem running the laptop at 65°. Or is it considered best practice to always have the fans running as much as possible to keep CPU temperatures as low as possible?

I look forward to your expertise.

Many thanks,

Marc

It is normal for the processor to reach 65-70°C while the processor does not exceed Tjunction limit (105°C). Of course fan speed control is required to achieve optimal thermal performance; such cooling solution is provided in this case by the computer manufacturer.

So, the processor is not yet exceeding Tjunction but since this system has been used for some time, I recommend you checking that the fan vents are not obstructed and perhaps you can also get more information regarding what is considered to be normal fan speeds for this model; dust may accumulate over time.

hi joe_intel,

As I understand, the processor itself does not report Tcase temperature. How can I find it out? When I run OCCT, it shows four core temperatures and the CPUTIN temperature. Can I assume that CPUTIN = Tcase temp or not? If not, can You tell me what is the maximum safe core temp for 2700K?

Hi nbalandin,

The Tcase temperature of the Intel® Core™ i7-2700K is 72.6°C. It means the maximum temperature over the processor. Processor is capable to support up to 90 Celsius degrees for small periods of time.
