Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 Speed drops, very unstable 1Mb/s

Hello,

I have issue with Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 on my notebook Thinkpad P40 Yoga

OS Windows 10 x64 pro

Speed in Wifi Status window shows 3 bars only and speed drops very often from 108 Mb/s to 1 Mb/s, therefore LAN speed and internet are very slow, around 900 KB/s download and 35 KB/s upload.

I read lots of threads and i tried many possible solutions but nothing helps, my router http://www.edimax.com/edimax/merchandise/merchandise_detail/data/edimax/global/wireless_routers_n300/br-6428ns_v3/ EDIMAX BR-6428nS V3

I tried also different channels 1,11, security setting: WPA2 (AES)

Also connecting to wifi router takes quite long. My other devices eg. phone works fine, so i think router is OK.

My temporary fix:

It is very weird, but when i bring my notebook very close to my router for 5 seconds, speed become stable 150 Mb/s sometimes 180 Mb/s, then i can go to another room and speed remains stable with green 4 bars always..., but when i restart pc, or go to sleep mode, or disconnect from wifi, speed become unstable again. Then i must again go very close to my wifi antenna for few seconds and so on...

Hello Nafalem,

The Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 is a WiFi adapter designed with the current standards for wireless networks, therefore, you may need to do some adjustments for it to work with older access Points/routers.

Please apply the following:

1. Download and install https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26346/Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Windows-10?product=86068 Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows® 10 [19.20.0].

2. Contact http://www.edimax.com/edimax/download/download/data/edimax/global/download/for_home/wireless_routers/wireless_routers_n300/br-6428ns_v3 Edimax* Support and make sure you are using the recommended Firmware for your Wireless router.

3. Disable the Bluetooth* component in your PC, this is normally done with a switch in the PC chassis or with a key combination.

4. Go to the Power options of you laptop, in the Advanced Settings for your Power Plan, and make sure that the Wireless Adapter is set to work at "Maximum Performance" when plugged in and on battery.

If the issue persists, please provide the following details:

- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility Download Intel® System Support Utility, run the tool and use it to create and save a report with all sections, then add your reply to this thread and use the Advanced editor options to attach the resulting file to your post.

- Is this the adapter that came installed from factory with your PC?

Regards,

Jonathan.

Hello Nafalem,

We reviewed the logs you provided and if the issue persists after disabling Bluetooth* and setting Maximum performance in the power plan, then consider the following:

- Go to Device Manager, Network Adapters, select the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260, go to the Advanced driver properties, then adjust the following settings:

802.11n Channel Width for 2.4GHz: 20 MHz only

HT Mode: HT mode

- You are currently using channel 1 of the 2.4 GHz band, try using a different Wireless Channel, and remove any sources of interference. As mentioned in the following document:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking/000005493.html Quick Checks to Improve or Fix Wireless Connection Issues

- We also noticed that you have some VMware Virtual Ethernet adapters, if possible, disable these devices and check if it helps.

Regards,

Jonathan.

Hello,

i made suggested changes in settings:

802.11n Channel Width for 2.4GHz: 20 MHz only

HT Mode: HT mode

Channel: changed from 1 to 11 (in router settings)

wmvare adaptes and bluetooth were already disabled

but it did not help, speed is slow and it is dropping

Note: Notebook is in same room as router, distance between notebook and router is less than 2 meters.

Hello Nafalem,

The information found in the new logs is similar to the one in the previous ones. The signal quality is not the optimal (79% and 60%). The driver settings and power configuration are the ones recommended, also, we already discarded Bluetooth* as a possible source of interference.

At this point, we recommend you to test connectivity with other access points. This would help you determine if the situation is present only when connecting to this access point, or if the PC has issues with other WiFi networks as well.

Hello again,

At this moment i do not have different 802.11n router, i was doing few tests with older router http://www.tplink.com/ie/products/details/?model=TL-WR542G TL-WR542G with speed 54 Mbps 802.11g, speed on wireless adapter seems to be stable 48 - 54 Mbps, LAN transfer speed is max 2500 KB/s (~2,5 MB/s).

Both tests are made in same distance, less than 2 meters from router (http://www.edimax.com/edimax/merchandise/merchandise_detail/data/edimax/global/wireless_routers_n300/br-6428ns_v3/ EDIMAX BR-6428nS V3).

If Throughput Booster is enabled, LAN speed is around 7300 KB/s (around 7 MB/s), adapter shows 150 Mb/s, speed rarely drops to 72000 Mb/s and remains same also after notebook sleep mode, but it dosn't go faster if i bring notebook very close to router antenna.

Notebook Trick bring close to antenna and return back:

If Throughput Booster is Disabled, LAN speed is 11400 KB/s (around 11 MB/s), adapter shows 150-180 Mb/s speed will drop to 1-6 Mb/s after notebook sleep mode. Sometimes i am able to connect with 150-180 Mb/s speed from long distance (2 meters), with same setting posted in previous post.

Anyway it is weird, why speed dosn't drop back to 6 Mbps when notebook is far from router...

Hello Nafalem

If the issue is present also when using a different access point, it may indicate a problem with the wireless adapter in your PC, this should be analyzed by the http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/OEMs.html Computer Manufacturer Support, or their authorized service provider.

From our end, we advise you to try a clean installation, using the "Driver only" method:

1. Download https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26339 Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for IT Admins, 19.20.0. File: Wireless_19.20.0_Driver64_Win10.zip

2. Extract the contents of the zip file to a known location in your hard drive.

3. Go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and Uninstall "Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software". When prompted, choose the option to "Discard settings".

4. In Control Panel, Device Manager, Network Adapters, right click on the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 and Uninstall it. Make sure you mark the option to "Delete the driver software for this device".

5. Reboot the PC or scan for hardware changes, check device manager and if an older wireless driver is detected and installed, repeat the actions to uninstall and delete it as well. Repeat this process until the OS does not allow deleting the driver, or until the controller shows as Unknown Device.

6. Remove temporary files: Press the Windows Key + R to open the run box. Type Cleanmgr.exe. Press OK. Select the main drive, usually C:\. Check Temporary Files and uncheck everything else. Press OK.

7. Go to Device Manager and locate the 8260 (it may be an unknown device), select the option to install the driver and browse to the location where you extracted the driver files.

Regards,

Jonathan.

Hello Nafalem,

We checked with our additional resources about this situation and we advise you to try the new driver version 19.20.3.

You can install the standard version version first:

Hello Nafalem,

We are sorry to know that the issue persists; we noticed that the log still shows a low signal strength (59%) even after trying multiple actions and changing settings related to this condition. This suggests a problem with the antenna, or the way your computer handles the wireless signal.

In this case, we strongly recommend you to contact http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/ Lenovo Support or their authorized service provider, so they can check the connection of the antennas, or if there is any other hardware issue affecting the signal quality.

Hello again,

i visited nearest Lenovo Service Provider, they found following issue: "one of cable connectors led to wifi module was loose or poorly connected". Now signal strength is 99% and i can connect through few walls without problems.
