Poor WiFi range and speed AC 8260

I have just bought an HP Elitebook 1030 G1 and the WiFi performance is very disappointing.

It has an Intel AC 8260 card. As a direct comparison, the range and speed is far inferior to my Dell laptop that has an AC 7265 card. At a distance from the router where the Dell is starting to lose speed on a Speedtest.net test, the HP is unusable with slow speeds and stalling during downloads.

On speedtest the Dell has a flat chart of constant performance, the HP is very erratic with huge dips.

Both the HP and Dell have the same settings in Device manager and within the power profiles. And I have done a clean install with new drivers so there is no bloatware.

Could this be a faulty WiFi card, or could the hardware be overriding the power settings of the card?

Hello Melb-HP,

Please keep in mind that the design of the computer and the wireless specifications are defined by the http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/OEMs.html Computer Manufacturer, so you might want to check on this with http://support.hp.com/us-en/ HP Support as well.

Here are a few things for you to check about the wireless adapter, that may help in this type of case.

- Go to the Power options of you laptop, in the Advanced Settings for your Power Plan, and make sure that the Wireless Adapter is set to work at "Maximum Performance" when plugged in and on battery.

- Disable the Bluetooth* component in your PC, this is normally done with a switch in the PC chassis or with a key combination.

- Contact the manufacturer of the access point and make sure the Firmware is up to date.

If the issues persist, please provide the following:

- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility Download Intel® System Support Utility, run the tool and use it to create and save a report with all sections, then add your reply to this thread and use the Advanced editor options to attach the resulting file to your post.

- Access point/router model and firmware version.

Regards,

Jonathan

I have also the problem with Intel AC 8260, it is coming with my new laptop Lenovo Thinkpad T460p.

I am using 5GHz wireless, and on MacBook Pro 2014 I was easily getting 800Mpbs in speed, but on new Thinkpad T460p it is only 173Mpbs

Hello vtk,

Please make sure you applied the recommendations mentioned in our previous post (Power plan settings, disable Bluetooth*, firmware update in the access point).

If the issue persists, provide the log from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility Intel® System Support Utility and the access point information.

Regards,

Jonathan.

Hello, I've made recommended changes, the issue still persist.

As for the access point I use Asus AC3100 router with DD-WRT firmware.

I am trying to post log from Support utility here:

Hello Vtk,

Checking the SSU log, the negotiated connection rate is 144.4 Mbps, and the Signal Strength is 80 %, this appears to be the reason why the WiFi link is not working as expected.

Keep in mind that this type of issue can be due to interference from electrical devices or power lines, contention from other networks, or even hardware issues in the PC.

We can check a few things to discard some possibilities from the adapter side:

- Download and install https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26346/Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Windows-10?product=86068 Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows® 10 [19.20.0].

- Go the Advanced Driver settings of the 8260 in Device Manager and enable U-APSD support. This may help with some new Access Points. If the issue persists, feel free to set it back to disabled.

- Go the Access point and try changing the Wireless channel. Make sure the channel your access point or wireless router is using is not overlapping or is in use by another nearby access point. You can find more information about this in the following document:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking/000005493.html Quick Checks to Improve or Fix Wireless Connection Issues

Let us know if this helps, or in case you require further assistance.

I have run the Intel System Support Utility and it shows the connection at 144 mbps.

Strangely this is not what is shown on the adapter properties where the connection cycles up and down between 65 and 115, and occasionally into the 40's. The signal strength is 99%. The adapter properties showed 72 during the test. I ran the test 3 times. Always the same.

My other laptop with an AC 7265 stays connected at 144 mbps.

Here is the log

Hello Melb-HP,

Please make sure you have applied the previous recommendations since they can help in your case: power plan settings, disable Bluetooth* and update AP firmware,

Checking the SSU log, you are using 2.4 GHz channel 6, so there are a few changes you can apply in the advanced driver properties of the adapter (from Device Manager):

- 802.11n Channel Width for 2.4GHz: 20 MHz only

- Transmit Power: 5 Highest

- HT Mode: HT mode

If the issue persists, make sure you log in to your Access point and try changing to a different channel. Many access points use channel 6 by default and this may cause contention with other wireless networks.

As a side-note When attaching the SSU log it is not necessary to post the XML contents manually, it is better if you run the Scan with all sections, in the Review screen click "Next", then Save the information a file; after this you can add your reply to this thread and use the Advanced editor options to attach the resulting file to your post.

I had similar issues, also Bluetooth LE devices not connecting if not near the card. The AC8260 m.2 has poor antenna connectors. See if your antenna cables have not become loose. Even if they seem connected at first glance, it might not be so. If you decide to tighten them yourself, be very careful. Breaking those connector makes the card unusable. If you don't have the expertise, please find a qualified professional!
