PCI-e 2.0 and 3.0

I have an Intel core i3-3220. It only supports PCI-e 2.0 x16. I have been told that PCI-e 3.0 will go into the slot anyway. My motherboard (Gigabyte ga-b75m-hd3) will support 3.0 but the chipset doesn't control the bus for it. The CPU does. I want to get a EVGA Geforce GTX 650 which is a 3.0 x16. Will it work? If so, will there be any differences in performance? I have been told by a guy on a forum that it will work.

I understand you need compatibility information for PCI Express revisions.

The processor model i3-3220 handles PCI Express revision 2.0. At this stage if you install a Pie video card 3.0 the card will work as 2.0 version. I regret to inform you that Intel does not have performance information for this compatibility; this will be provided by the card vendor or manufacturer.

Allan.
