4965AGN Wireless Link - Windows 7 64-bit "This device cannot start. (code 10)"

A few years ago, I picked up an Intel 4965AGN Wireless Link. Building myself an HTPC, I used an embedded solution ITX motherboard.

To check that all the hardware is working, I booted up into Puppy Linux, and the wireless connected fine.

I installed Windows 7 64-bit, to only discover that the 4965AGN has a yellow triangle in the Device Manager. Under the device properties, "This device cannot start. (code 10)"

I tried downloading the latest, then earlier, then earlier again, drivers for the 4965AGN, from the Intel website, but the results have been the same.

It is clearly a problem with the drivers because the 4965AGN works under Puppy Linux, but not under Windows.

I am really sorry for this issue.

It is possible that this wireless adapter is not validated for your system. You may want to contact the system/motherboard manufacturer in order to get a list of validated wireless adapters.

Hello Joe_intel,

Thank you for your response.

The motherboard is the KBN-I/2100. I contacted the manufacturer, ECS, and they indicated that if the PCI-e device works fine under one operating system, it should be working in another.

There are no errors in the BIOS. Windows recognizes the 4965AGN, but does not start it. Using Windows Update for newer drivers does not help either.

There is no doubt that the problem lies with the Windows drivers. Is there a schedule for update drivers to be released?

Thank you,

The latest Intel® Proset software package version for this wireless adapter and operating system is https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22116 15.3.1. There are no plans to release more driver versions in the future due to the age of this product.

Please make sure you have this version installed. We have to consider that sometimes only certain products are admitted by the BIOS to be used with your system.

Hello joe_intel,

Thank you for your reply.

I tried using a USB adapter, given it is less work than uninstalling the Intel 4965AGN from the motherboard and changing it out for alternate mini PCI-e adapter, unfortunately it's performance and reliability is significantly less than that of the 4965AGN when compared with the USB adapter. I tested and compared the adapters using Puppy Linux.

There is no issue with the BIOS, it is Windows (fresh install, drivers 15.3.1) refusing to start the device.

It appears that some solution using the Linux driver may be possible, http://www.elpauer.org/2011/03/linux-drivers-running-on-windows/ Linux drivers running on Windows | elpauer

but that is beyond skill and interest level for the time being.

Perhaps someone from the community will assist in repairing the driver for the 4965AGN.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Interesting idea you propose but it is also beyond my skills considering the knowledge I have about Linux*. You may contact http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/contactsupport Intel support if you want to get other support options in Windows* 7.
