HDMI Sleep Problems

I've just purchased a new monitor (AOC Q2781PQ). When my PC instructs the monitor to go to sleep through HDMI it'll initially go to sleep and the backlight turns off.

But it'll keep coming up with "NO SIGNAL" messages intermittently whilst it is sleeping.

Sometimes the cycling of NO SIGNAL message then backlight immediately off, then on again, then the NO SIGNAL message, can happen repeatedly quite quickly.

Sometimes it happens one time only, then happens again in maybe 10 minutes time.

It it quite annoying.

There seems to be an 'incompatibility' with the monitor sleep function between Intel HD4600 graphics and the AOC Q2781PQ monitor.

I am using a Gigabyte H87N-WIFI V1.0 motherboard with Windows 10 Creators Update. I need to use HDMI to get 2560x1440 resolution.

I previously had a ViewSonic monitor connected through a DVI <-> HDMI cable to the same port on the motherboard. It never had these issues.

I have tried the following to resolve it:

* Using the latest released driver (15.40.34.4624).

* Upgrading the Intel Video BIOS from 1028 to 1043 (latest for Haswell/Broadwell). I had to make a custom BIOS to do this.

* Different HDMI cable, different HDMI port on motherboard.

* Using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver. Same problem.

* Using the Intel Linux graphics driver included with Ubuntu Linux 17.04. Same problem.

None of this works.

I note that other people have complained about this same HDMI sleep problem in the past with HD4600 graphics:

https://communities.intel.com/thread/54141 https://communities.intel.com/thread/54141

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=175097

It doesn't seem to have been fixed.

Do I need to wait for a firmware / driver fix (probably never?) or is there some configuration settings I can try changing?

Let me know if more info is needed.

Thanks.

Hello JamesG,

Thank you for contacting Intel Communities.

I'll give you the descriptive info that is wanted.

The diagnostics files have serial numbers and network information in them. I'm not uploading those publicly online. If you want them provide me an e-mail address to send it to, or other means of privately uploading.

I'd suggest this is a firmware / low-level hardware issue given it happens on both Windows and Linux.

Description

Provide a detailed description of the issue

When the PC has instructed the monitor to go to sleep it'll initially turn off. But then intermittently the backlight will turn on, it will display NO SIGNAL, then immediately the backlight turns back off again.

This is through a HDMI connection.

Seems to happen regardless of operating system. Observed under Windows 10 and Ubuntu Linux 17.04.

Other people have complained about this issue previously with HD4600 graphics:

Hello JamesG,

When the PC goes to sleep, the graphics controller will cut any video signal off, this is why you keep on getting the "No signal" message. The issue is more related to the monitor configuration other than issues with the graphics driver, this is why it happens with both Windows® 10 & Ubuntu.

You may want to check with the monitor manufacturer to see what is the expected behavior of your monitor, in addition, you can check if you have the latest http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005952.html .inf for your monitor (contact AOC for further information).

I hope this information helps.

Yes - I contacted the local AOC service/support office. They just replied asking for a serial number. Never heard anything at all after that.

Monitor .inf is the latest I could find.

I don't get the impression the monitor is supposed to do this. The behavior isn't consistent.

Regards,

James Grant.

Hi JamesG,

Thank you for the update.

Please let me know if you get any news from AOC, as you mentioned, this behavior didn't happen with your previous monitor, so this could be an issue with the new one other than issues with the graphics controller.
