Add additional Fans to P4000XXSFDR

Simple question!

With the system set to performance (S1200SPL board), the fans are quite loud.

Does anyone know if I can add additional fans to the P4000XXSFDR chassis? The MoBo supports additional fans and I would like the system to stay cooler and not spin up the fans so often.

thanks,

-Joe

Hello Joe,

The chassis is designed to support the current hardware and be within the temperature threshold for the items installed in the unit.

You might want to capture the system logs of your system to see what it is being recorded that is making the fans to run loud.

Hello Joe,

We would like to know if you were able to capture the system logs of your system to see what it is being recorded that is making the fans to run loud and if you could share that information.

Best regards,

Hi Caesar-

Many apologies for the delay. When the system is running loud, it is VERY loud, there does not seem to be any load on the server from a CPU perspective (1-10% max). Can you tell me which system logs you are looking for? Windows logs, BIOS logs?

Note, I changed the system to acoustic and the fans will still spin up for hours at a time very loudly. My client is complaining profusely now, so will need to take action soon.

Thanks,

-Joe

Hello jetcosys ,

Please swap around the power supplies and let us know if you are using a UPS system.

Hi Caesar-

Not sure what you mean by swap power supplies. Swap the power cables?

Yes, it is on an APC UPS.

Thanks,

-Joe

Hello jetcosys

I believe they meant to interchange the position of the power supplies. This means to move Power Supply 1 to Power Supply Slot 2 and vice versa. Would it be possible to test one or both of the power supplies connected directly to the power outlet, bypassing the APC UPS. I noticed some power supply errors and we are trying to narrow it down to a power supply issue or to the UPS itself.

Hi David-

Sorry, I'm not following. This is a production server. You want me to arbitrarily take it offline and test power supplies, how? You're not telling me what to look for or why. Also, Swap them internally? What does this show? How is any of this related to fan noise? I need a lot more info before we do this on a production server. If you are saying the Power Supplies are bad, let's do an RMA and swap them.

Thanks,

-Joe

jetcosys Hi there Joe!

You do have a valid concern. In this case, we might need to schedule some downtime to work on this unit.

We found some errors on both power supplies but mostly for power supply 2. Here are some of the entries we are seeing.

"Power Supply PS2 Status (# 0x51) Informational event: PS2 Status reports there is a configuration error - the BMC cannot access the PMBus device on the PSU but its FRU device is responding. Integrated BMC - LUN# 0 (Channel# 0)".

"Power Supply PS2 Status (# 0x51) Warning event: PS2 Status reports a predictive failure due to under-voltage has been detected that may result in power supply failure. Integrated BMC - LUN# 0 (Channel# 0)".

Whenever the unit is running in a degraded state such as power supply errors, memory errors, fan errors will make the fans to run at full speed. This is how the system gets your attention physically.

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/server-products/000005890.html System Fan Runs Too Fast or Too Loud

Additionally, we need to confirm that the Fan Profile is set to Acoustic. I took a deeper look at your BIOS settings and it did not show any value for this setting.

Set Fan Profile

===============

Current Value : Not Available

-----------------------------

Possible Values

---------------

Performance : 01

Acoustic : 02

You can find this system in BIOS > Advanced > Acoustic and Performance Configuration and set the Fan Profile to Acoustic.

I fully understand how inconvenient it might be to take a server down during the day or during weekdays. For this, I would recommend contacting our http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html Technical Support Team to expedite the resolution of your case.

Best regards,

Hi David-

I can tell you that I have definitely set the Fan profile to Acoustic.

Can you tell me when the power supplies were showing issues? Is it something happening often in the logs or maybe at the very beginning when I was building the system, not on a UPS, and installing? Or, is this something you see in the logs as happening sporadically still?

Thanks much!

Hi jetcosys

We see these entries in a few occasions in February. This is happening sporadically; however, it is occurring every day. Thanks for the update about the Fan profile.

Hey David-

Were you waiting for a reply from me on this topic? Not sure what my next steps are here. I can swap the power supplies, but then what's needed? Or, would it just be better to RMA the chassis for another one? I'd like to know what direction to take to finish this as the fans spun out of control again today.

Thanks,

-Joe

Ok, I will get that done. How will I know of the outcome? What am I measuring here, or are you saying the fan noise will stop when I swap the PS units?

Thanks Caesar,

Hello Joe,

I meant you could RMA the chassis for another one. Test it and let us know of the outcome.

However, If you prefer, in order to expedite the resolution of this case you could http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html Contact Support .
