Doom @ Vulkan

Hi everyone,

since the latest v4474/v4475 drivers it's possible to play Doom (2016) on OpenGL using Intel HD / Iris Graphics. Big THX to the driver team!!!

Today ID Software released a patch to add Vulkan support for Doom

But here is the problem:

The latest Intel Vulkan Beta drivers are https://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2016/06/29/new-intel-graphics-test-driverdriver-for-windows-10-and-windows-781-15404473 v4473... and with those Doom refuses to start (The known problem before v4474/4475).

May I request a new Beta driver? I want to see how Doom performs when using the Vulkan API.

Thanks an kind regards,

Loeschzwerg

Hi Alberto

NUC6i7KYK Win 10 Pro 64 Bit with latest updates installed.

I configured Doom to start with Vulkan API, but the game crashes with the v4473 Vulkan Beta driver directly after starting.

Hello:

Thank you very much for the information provided VisorZ.

To Loeschzwerg, I hope the information above was helpful for you.

Let me apologize because I misunderstood the information you were looking for, and I gave you the wrong driver.

To be able to play Doom using the Vulkan API, this is the driver that might work:

You still don't get it. Could you read properly before posting?

So your link is a waste.

Is there someone from Intel that is able to read and understand the problem?

VisorZ: Thanks for your Input, that's what I did too, starting Doom with "render_api -2" I tried the Vulkan drivers v4404 and v4473 Driver, both Crash.

The author from Golem (Marc) used the v4473 Driver and luckily it worked for him. He's investigating the case too.

@Alberto: Sorry, the driver doesn't allow me to run Doom @ Vulkan. I tried it on my NUC6i5SYK and NUC6i7KYK.

Doesn't work with 4473 on my HD 530. I have to run 4474 or 4475 but there is no Vulkan support in these drivers. Intel has to fix their Vulkan driver.

Hi, thanks for testing. I tried to add Vulkan support on top of 4474 but that is not possible. And copying driver files into system directories is only fun at the beginning but not when trying to undo the mess. So I stopped and wait for team Intel to reach Vulkan Gold status on Win10.64.

Hello Loeschzwerg:

Thank you very much for that information VisorZ, it is very useful in this case.

I just wanted to let you know that according to our information, the driver v4473 was the one that fixes this problem with Doom not starting, that is why I gave you that driver again, just to make sure you were trying the right one.

I looked for the driver version 4475, but that one is not available in our web site, the latest version is 4474 that you already tried as well.

Please try the following driver, it is version 4463, that was the one before driver version 4473, that according to our information might fix this problem:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26078/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=80939 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26078/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=80939

Please let me know the results of trying that one.

Any questions, please let me know.

Alberto

To sum up all the driver information:

20.19.15.4463 => OpenGL @ Doom crashes; no Vulkan Support

20.19.15.4473 => OpenGL @ Doom crashes; Vulkan is supported but Doom crashes on startup ("render_api -2")

20.19.15.4474 => OpenGL @ Doom works; no Vulkan Support

21.20.16.4475 => OpenGL @ Doom works; no Vulkan Support

Hi,

I have same Problem to run Doom 4 on Intel HD Graphics 530.

I tested all Intel Driver with Vulkan Support. but no Chance to start it.

This Guys from Golem.de can start Doom with Intel GPU ? ask him if he can create a Screenshot with GPU Info on Display !!

I dont think anyone can start Doom 4 with Vulkan Api on Intel GPU

Alberto@

that is not Hardware Problem ! Intel Driver not work with doom and Vulkan Api. The Driver Team must optimize a new Driver for doom.

I can start Doom 4 with my Nvidia GTX970 without Problem. But if i disable my nvidia Card, doom not run with Vulkan on Intel GPU.

I have i7-6700k CPU and 16GB Ram - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

If you need more Info about my System, please read my another Doom thread in this forum.

Hello Loeschzwerg:

Based on the fact that none of the driver that are available worked for this scenario, what we are going to do now is to replicate the case, for that we just need some information about your system configuration.

Please fill the following chart:

ie Does it have AMD or NV graphics too? Make and model of any Displays that are used to see the issue (see note2 below).  LFP = Local Flat Panel (Laptop panel)

EFP = External Flat Panel (Monitor you plug in) How much memory [RAM] in the system (see note2 below). Provide any other hardware needed to replicate the issue.

ie: Cables&brand, cable type [vga, hdmi, DP, etc], dock, dongles/adapters, etc Hardware Stepping (see note1 below)...

Hi, the author of the Golem article answered me and told me that 15.4473 worked for him on his Haswell CPU with HD 520 but on his 6820HK with HD 530 the same driver did not work. Obviously HD 530 is another chip and needs a different driver tweak for DOOM to run on Vulkan.

@Alberto: Please grab the information chart and the SSU from here => /message/398972# 398972 https://communities.intel.com/message/398972# 398972 The only difference is the driver version

I will attach the report of the Graphics control panel when I'm home from work.

VisorZ : Thanks for the info.

EDIT: Ok, attached the Control Panel Report.

Provide a detailed description of the issue

Doom tries to launch, the screen shortly goes black and then the application crashes to the desktop. Both in OpenGL and Vulkan mode. Even when I try to start directly in Vulkan mode, it fails with the latest Vulkan driver. OpenGL mode has been fixed with later drivers as mentioned but Vulkan is waiting for a compatible driver

Hello Loeschzwerg:

Thank so much for that information, we appreciate that.

Now, we are going to replicate and investigate the issue.

As soon as I get the resolution I will post it on this thread.

Now, I did not see anything about the BIOS version on the NUC, it is always recommended to do the BIOS update to the latest version.

Here is the link of how to do it:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/desktop-boards/000005724.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/desktop-boards/000005724.html

And here is the BIOS .BIO file that you need, it is version 0037:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26087/BIOS-Update-KYSKLi70-86A-?product=89187 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26087/BIOS-Update-KYSKLi70-86A-?product=89187

Any questions, please let me know.

Both NUCs (NUC6i5SYK and NUC6i7KYK) already have the latest BIOS version flashed. I'm an enthusiast, so I'm always using the latest available software
