Wake on Wireless LAN (Intel Wireless AC-3160)

Going to Device Manager > Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 > Power Management shows features like "Allow this device to wake the computer" and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer" but after sending many wake packets to the computer when sleeping (S3) it does not wake up. There are also many options in the advanced tab, including "ARP offload for WoWLAN", "GTK rekeying for WoWLAN", "NS offload for WoWLAN", "Sleep on WoWLAN disconnect", "Wake on Magic Packet" and "Wake on Magic Pattern" (not shown, but further down in the list"). Does the Intel Dual Band Wireless AC-3160 support Wake on Wireless LAN? I'm sure many people would benefit from Wake on Wireless LAN, especially in business environments.

Hi Joe,

It seems that post was submitted in February 2014, and possibly for that reason, no 802.11AC compatible cards are listed. Is it possible that the list of supported cards have since been updated? Thanks

It should work with the Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260.

However, this a platform dependent feature; so, the whole system has to support it as sold by the system manufacturer.

I understand now that Wake on Wireless LAN is supported by the Intel Wireless AC-7260. The 7260 and the 3160 are very similar (I believe the main difference is 2x2 vs 1x1)

Is the feature also supported on the 3160, of course also depending on the OEM?

Hello InconspicuousDuck,

Sorry for the delay. We are checking with the proper resources to make sure we provide accurate information, since Wake On Wireless LAN was recently added and the information about this is not documented yet.

Hello InconspicuousDuck,

We are sorry for the delay in response.

The Wake on Wireless LAN feature was added to Intel wireless adapters as part ofhttps://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/smart-connect-technology.html Intel® Smart Connect Technology. The Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 supports this technology.

In order to use WoWL and other Smart Connect features; the wireless adapter and other computer components must support Intel® Smart Connect Technology.

You can find more information about this in the http://www.intel.com/support/services/smartconnect/sb/CS-033105.htm Intel® Smart Connect Technology Frequently Asked Questions.

In order to know if a PC supports this technology, it is recommended to check with the computer manufacturer, as Intel® Smart Connect Technology requires a select Intel® processor, Intel® software and BIOS update, Intel® Wireless adapter, and Internet connectivity. Solid-state memory or drive equivalent may also be required. Depending on system configuration, your results may vary.

For a detailed explanation of the different settings related to WoWL available in the Advanced properties of the Wireless adapter, we advise you to review the document: http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-025393.htm What Are the Advanced Wi-Fi Adapter Settings?

Why would Intel require a proprietary solution (Intel Smart Connect Technology)? Given that, it's hardly a surprise that it's not widely supported.

And I had to laugh when seeing this in the FAQ. Even if it IS supported, the normal WoL tools that have been around for decades wouldn't work anyway. Hilarious.

Q: Will the remote wake feature work with all applications?

A: No, currently the remote wake feature will only work with Splashtop's* Anytime Access Pack. More applications are coming soon.
