Intel HD Graphics driver fails to start after Windows 10 creators update

Hi there,

After installing creators update to Windows10 x64 pro Intel HD Graphics 4000 card stopped to work, system falled back to Microsoft basic driver. The symptoms are very similar to - playing with driver versions from Lenovo or Intel does not help.

Need to note, if secondary monitor is attached, it works until Windows login screen is shown, then driver fails.

Does anybody knows any workarounds available?

Good catch! Flashed BIOS 2.69, but nothing changed.

Also tried driver recommended by Lenovo (10.18.10.4425). No effect as well.

Attached the ssu log.

Here is driver 9.17.10.4459 from Microsoft if you like to try

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2017/03/200042688_200a683c8b3223be5bf2e0ef0e147f2e1c945f2f.cab http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2017/03/200042688_200a683c8b3223be5bf2e0ef0e147f2e1c94

Install driver via have disk method as described at:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-intel-beta-graphics-drivers-surface

(ignore prolog about MS surface, treat CAB like ZIP)

BTW the information from WER report is quite insufficient.

A crash dump from c:\Windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG\ contains some more infos for educated guessing.

Thanks! Attached a crash dump, though it seem to be winlogon.exe, not dwm.exe. Cannot find dwm dumps in the folder.

The Microsoft version of the driver (9.17.10.4459) does not help as well.

Collected the crash dump https://www.dropbox.com/s/655kc5bask3ligg/dwm.exe.6988.zip?dl=0 Dropbox - dwm.exe.6988.zip .

Stefan, thanks! As expected, no much use of winlogon dump. Installed the windbg and here is the dwm. exe analysis - seem to be null pointer dereference:

Hello Denisss

I am reviewing your case I am seeing that you have tried have tried to install the graphics drivers from Intel® which in your system will be the generic drivers, also I see the windows driver did not help to solve the problem, seems that we can try looking into Lenovo to assist on this case, I was doing research on the problem and I was able to spot on the following link the list of tested Lenovo systems for the Operating system (OS) that you are using

https://support.lenovo.com/cr/en/solutions/ht505322 https://support.lenovo.com/cr/en/solutions/ht505322

I was not able to find your system on the tested Lenovo devices for Windows® 10 fall creators, on the other hand, you can contact the manufacturer for them to replicate your situation.

Hello Leonardo,

Thank you for pointing to the list of possible migration issues found by Lenovo testing. However I have tried the Lenovo set of Windows 10 graphics drivers as well with the same results and I do not see similar cases in their reports.

Looking into the stack trace I do not see any vendor-specific components, but Microsoft DirectX and Intel driver calls only. Therefore I do not see how Lenovo can effectively help me with troubleshooting of this issue.

So I would greatly appreciate if you provide code analysis results based on the crash dump attached. I am ready to reproduce the issue with debug libraries if more precise information needed and the libraries provided to me.

Thank you!

Hello Denisss

Thank you for your response

On the thread that you have made reference to on the original post (/thread/120734 https://communities.intel.com/thread/120734) the customer had graphics problems after the Operating System (OS) update, in that case, it was due to of incomparability with the component StarTech USB-HDMI that need it a driver updated, just to verify on your scenario are you using any hub on docking station? Besides the corruption on the screen that you provide in the picture are you having any error codes once the drivers are installed? Do you have the same display corruption with Microsoft basic driver?

Hello Leonardo,

No usb devices are connected, this is laptop screen. I have not seen any driver install errors and Microsoft driver works fine.

In the referenced thread the callstack in the crash dump pointed to the StarTech driver calls. In my case no obvious reason, only Microsoft and Intel libraries are involved.

Intel igd10umd64!OpenAdapter crashes trying to dereference null pointer

Looking at the source code may help understanding what object had been passed as null, and why this was not expected by the driver.

Hello Denisss

Thank you for waiting, allowed me to share with you that we were able to perform a lab with the same graphics controller using the following hardware/software:

  • Lenovo x230 tablet laptop.
  • HD graphics 4000.
  • Windows® 10 (64 bit) fall creators update (clean installation).
  • Windows updates completed.
  • Graphics driver version:
    • 10.18.0010.4252.
    • 10.18.0010.4885.

With both driver versions, we did not have any display problem (see picture attach).

At this moment the best option would be contacting Lenovo* to see if they can replicate the issue with the exact same system you have in their lab.

Leonardo C.

Hello Leonardo_intel, thank you for trying to help!

As there is no other option, I have run the Windows clean install and the issue gone away.
