7700k vs 6700k heat + RAM support

hello guys , i am building a new pc & i have two questions , first is i'm stuck with a choice for CPU + motherboard , 6700k + Z170-P vs 7700k + Z270-P , now the thing is i can get both combo's at the same price , one would assume the seventh gen is better , but many review on the net says that the 7700k heats more than the 6700k & i'm afraid my cooler won't be enough , here's the one i'm getting "Cooler Master: Seidon 240P" , am i being worried for nothing? , second question , i see 7700k supports ram at max 2400 Mhz , is taking higher frequency ram (3000 Mhz) useless completely ? will it have opposite effect & overheat the cpu more ? thanks everyone for answers

Hi,

You can use high frequency ram by activating the XMP profile in bios.

I'm using 3600mhz and everything seems fine.

I don't think that ram will cause the CPU to heat up too much.

But you may see "BSOD's" a bit more often with higher frequency ram.

Have a look here:

In my case the average temp is good, nothing near those 100500c, that some have achieved.

But temp spike are with me at their best.

So I'm forced to sit with a manual low fan speed, to eliminate fan's howl.

 

If Intel would ask me, if I want to change my 7700k to 6700k, don't know, what would I say....

yeah everyone seems to be having those temperature spikes with the kabylake , wonder if anyone with 7700k have it normal without spikes on opening programs

To answer your first question, and this is my opinion, the newer the product the better, in terms of warranty, features and support, the combo of i7-7700K + Z270-P sounds pretty good, the board works with chipset Z270 that was released this year, and it seems to have pretty good features:

In regard to your second question, remember the processor supports: DDR4-2133/2400, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V, that maximum memory RAM speed supported is 2133MHz, so if you use the XMP profile or if you force the processor to run at 3000MHz, as it was mentioned before, you will get BSOD more frequently and sooner or later the PC will not work at all, that is something we do not recommend to do, instead we recommend to use the memory RAM at speeds that are fully supported by the processor, since the memory controller is located on it:

Additionally, the temperature situation that some of the Intel® Kaby Lake processors have is related to the temperature spiking, it is not related to the processor getting overheated, I just wanted to clarify that information.

Understood , indeed i was planning on getting the prime z270P from asus , but about temperatures , even if its spikes , it's still a problem that i don't think has been solved , and i wanted to know if it's only noticeable on Kaby Lake or even Sky lake

Kyozo, To answer your question, the behavior of the temperature spiking on the Intel® Kaby Lake processor is a matter that Intel is still currently investigating, once a possible resolution is provided you will be able to see all the details on the link that was provided previously:

This temperature behavior it is only showing on some of the Intel® Kaby Lake processors, the Intel® Sky Lake processors are not showing this kind of behavior or any other matter related to temperature whatsoever.
