HDMI port failure. External monitor showing green lines and pixels.

Hello community!

I currently have the MSI Apache pro G62 running with the GTX 960M. My notebook is working fine and I love it, however a few days ago my external monitor (which is the Acer R240HY) started showing some "Green lines and little dots" in some areas of the display. I was surprise and concerned about this issue because it never happened before. I have 7 months with this monitor and never had a problem like this before. It was working fine and color resolution was great.

However, I thought the problem was the monitor itself but after doing some tests using the monitor in different notebooks with different cable connectors (HDMI and VGA), I found the monitor isn't the problem. The display still working fine. Also, the MSI built -in display still working fine and the color resolution isn't affected, which means the problem is not related to the video card.

After doing some tests at my friend's house, I came back home thinking the problem may be related to the drivers or in a worst scenario... my HDMI port is failing.

What a surprise! I updated all my drivers including the Intel and Nvidia ones and the problem persists so I am thinking the problem may be the HDMI port itself.

It's not the cable, because it was already tested in a different computer and its not the monitor, because it was already tested too.

I need help on this because I really need to have my HDMI port working . The external display is part of my productivity and work and it's just difficult for me to be using the MSI built in display only, because I use my notebook as a desktop replacement and also, I am a video editor, photographer... and gamer lol.

Please, I need your help guys. I know that I can purchase the Mini Dp to HDMI adapter to continue using the display in a different port, but before I go ahead and do that, I need to make sure that my port is failing or what is causing this problem.

Hello fgonzalez1,

Try uninstalling the Intel® graphics driver, please see how to http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005598.html?wapkw=intel+display+audio Uninstall the Intel® Graphics Driver and Intel® Display HDMI/Audio Driver, and then go ahead and reinstall the graphics driver, make sure you have Windows up to date as well.

Once you have the driver uninstall, restart your system and then install the Intel driver manually, please see http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005629.html How to Manually Install an Intel® Graphics Driver in Windows® 10 & Windows 8* or Windows 8.1*

Download https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26228/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40- Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 and Windows 7*/8.1* [15.40]

You said that you have tested the HDMI cable in another system and it is working fine, but have you tested another HDMI on this system.

Regards,

Ivan

I really want to thank you for being the first person to answer this post after 2-3 days of being posted on this "community ".

Yes, I already tested the HDMI port of my laptop by connecting another device using a different HDMi cable and it works with no problems at all.

I already tried your steps and it is doing the same. I really do not know what is going on.

I've updated both drivers: Nvidia and Intel. Same problem.

It's not my computer HDMI port because it was tested connecting a VIZIO display and it worked fine, but I do not know what is going on because my monitor still working fine. I tested the monitor in another notebook (Alien) and it works great.

Have you updated the BIOS on this system? If not, I suggest you to update it, a BIOS update can help you to solve issues like this.

https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GE62-Apache-Pro-6th-Gen-GTX-960M.html# down-utility https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GE62-Apache-Pro-6th-Gen-GTX-960M.html# down-utility

Does your computer have other ports that you can test? If yes, try others and see the results, if with other ports the system works fine except with this one, then this port should be defective.

If you remove the Intel® graphics do you get the same problem using only the GTX 960M?

Try turning off your TV for an hour or so and unplugged all HDMIs. Then powered on TV and see how it goes.

Make sure it is properly seated on both monitor and laptop.

Also, make sure the HDMI that you're using is high quality cable, you can read on the cable if it is high quality cable.

Please reply with the following information to check your system:

I tried to update my BIOS, but there is no update available on the MSI download center link by using my notebook model. The only updates available are relating to MSI software. It seems they haven't release a new update yet for my notebook model.

Yes, my computer has the Mini DP port available. I already ordered the Mini DP to HDMI cable and it is going to arrive in a few days. However, I highly doubt the problem is related to the port itself because I already tested the port by connecting a VIZIO display and it works fine, but let's wait for the cable to see what happens.

I already tried to turn off, plug in and out, etc...

Tried to uninstall and install drivers: Intel Graphics and Nvidia

Sent an Email to MSI and they responded like it was a machine or something like that telling me this is something related to you guys (Intel).

The HDMI cable I am using now is from Amazon basics. I took the cable with me when I visited my friend to test the monitor and cable using his Alien laptop and it worked fine. Also, I've been using this cable for at least 8 months with no problems at all.

This is so strange, but I am thinking about reset my computer Windows 10 system and keep the files or reset the whole Windows 10 to install it from zero. This is going to be as a last alternative and what you think about this? also, where can I get an original copy of my Windows 10. I purchased this laptop brand new from Amazon. I should be able to get a copy of the original Windows 10 in case that something happens.

By the way, the problem persists. I am really getting tired of this. I've tried almost everything and this happens just from nowhere and no reason.

Just to understand, you connected another display to the same port you have problems with, and that display works fine, correct?

In that case your issue is either with the type of cable that your using or your monitor.

Try also to set the graphics to default setting, right-click the Windows desktop and select "Graphics Properties, then once you have the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel open press Ctrl-Alt-F8; this will set your system to default values.

That's correct. I already tried to connect another display and it was a VIZIO tv and it worked fine.

I tried to use the cable in a different computer and works fine. However, I already ordered the Mini DP to HDMI cable to see how it works.

Already tried to set the graphics to default setting and problem persists.

I would like to thank you Ivan for being so supportive. I do not know what else to do. I've tried everything.

I'm waiting for the cable to see if it works.

Hi fgonzalez1,

For now, let's wait for the Mini DP to HDMI cable to arrive to see how it goes.

Once you try it, I will appreciate if you could let me know.

Best wishes,

Sorry for the delay Ivan!

The Mini DP to HDMI adapter finally arrived, but my display says "Input no supported". I contacted Acer chat support and they told me to update my graphic drivers.

All my graphic drivers are up to date.

Also, I double check the Msi website for my notebook drivers and there was an update available for the BIOS. The bios is now updated, but problem persits.

I really do not know what else to do... I have tried everything.

Port is good.

Drivers are up to date.

Display is not damage.

Thank for the information you have kindly provided.

Try to see if there is an INF driver available for your TV/monitor, the INF supplies configuration information used by the operating system to implement the plug and play (PnP) features of the monitor. This configuration information includes supported refresh rates, screen resolution, and color quality settings and more.

Check with the website of your monitor manufacturer to see if a monitor driver or monitor .INF file is available for download.

Please be aware that Laptops can have video output connectors on a docking station, port replicator, or through a special cable from the manufacturer.

Also, check with your computer manufacturer for information on the supported multiple display configurations for your computer and for the supported and tested TV/monitor configurations for your computer model.

We always recommend using straight connection HDMI from the laptop to HDMI on the monitor or DP to DP, this is to get better performance and top avoid any interference.

If nothing works, a bad port can be the problem or you can check in the BIOS or with the laptop manufacturer to see if this option is available.

Try to change the refresh rate and resolution in the Intel® HD Graphics Panel, right-click the Desktop (or press Ctrl Alt F12) and select Graphics properties.

Regards,

Hello Ivan!

I have verified with Acer and they do not have .INF drivers available for this monitor. The only thing they have available is the driver file. I already installed that file and the problem persists.

The Mini DP to HDMI cable still there with no usage. My monitor keeps saying "Input not Supported". Tried to contact MSI but no answer yet.

However, I did a reset of my pc to see if this was a driver or software issue, but after the reset... problem still there. Also, I have three pictures showing that my monitor works fine while connected to other devices.

Today, I did a test with my HDMI port using three different displays... the port is working great. No problems with any of the displays tested.

I do not know what else to do ... I already tried EVERYTHING.

I think I am going to sell this monitor to someone else and purchase a different one. Because my HDMI port is recognizing all the monitors, but not mine.

Thank you for all your help Ivan! I appreciate it.

I sold the monitor to someone else.

I decided to do it that way because yesterday I realized that my HDMI port is working fine. 4 different monitors were tested using my notebook. All them work great.

It seems there's a problem with that Acer monitor firmware and my notebook which is strange because it was working right.

Won't recommend Acer to anyone. Horrible customer service and bad experience.

Thank you guys. I'm going to purchase the LG25UM57.
