Intel HD 4600 - 144Hz - Optimus

Hi everyone,

I have an optimus laptop with an Intel HD 4600. For those who don't know what that means, it means that while I have a dedicated graphics card (a 970m) all of the outputs are wired to my integrated card to allow the laptop to turn off the dedicated one when it is not needed. I am looking to purchase a 144Hz monitor and just wanted to double check whether the Intel HD 4600 supports 144Hz output. According to the quick reference https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-intel-processor-graphics here the intel hd 4600 can support :

DisplayPort* 1.2 / eDP*

H-Processors: 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz (Ultra-HD)

I have a mini DP on my laptop, and an HQ processor, and was curious as to whether this meant that throught the mini display port (and likely a mini DP to DP adapater) it would be possible to run 1080p at 144 / 120 Hz.

Thanks,

Hello OfficialPiAddict,

The bandwidth needed for 1080p@144 is roughly 8.96 Gbps based on this link http://k.kramerav.com/support/bwcalculator.asp http://k.kramerav.com/support/bwcalculator.asp. You will need to have DP 1.2 in your configuration, and by this I mean your graphics output, cable and the input of your T.V must be DP 1.2; so, in theory with this configuration you will be able to achieve it. However, before purchasing the TV, my recommendation is since you have a laptop you could take it to the store and see if you can achieve it, if possible do as much testing in order to check that resolution is possible.

Amy.

Hi Amy,

Thanks for answering

I just had one more question, would it also be able to output at the same resolution (and refresh rate) using DVI-D (converting Mini DP to DVI-D) if the monitor did not have a display port?

Thanks,

Just straight connections, bear in mind that your graphics output, cable and the input of your T.V must be DP 1.2.

Amy.
