Problem with Intel HD 530 on i7 6700k (black screen when installing driver)

Hello,

I have a Z170 Pro Gaming with i7 6700K. My Nvidia is on vacation, so I wanted to use the integrated graphic card. I use Windows 10 Anniversary Update (1607).

But when i'm installing the driver to use it, I have a black screen with no cursor. I must reboot the computer, and the only way to uninstall the Intel driver is to boot in safe mode.

I precise I uninstalled all the Nvidia driver with Display Driver Uninstaller before.

So, I tried all the driver since 2015 to the last of 2016 (beta 15.40.4530), still not working. I also tried reinstalling all the Intel drivers from scratch, same result.

My screen is an Asus ROG PG278Q, and I don't have any HDMI or VGA to test with. The only output is Display Port.

So, I blocked the automatic driver update of Windows Update, and run with the standard base graphic card of Microsoft for the moment. But I want to know what is wrong with this integrated graphic card.

Please can someone help ?

Hello maxpayne13:

The monitor should be compatible with Intel(R) graphics.

In this case first we recommend to install the graphics driver provided by the manufacturer of the board, not sure if that is the driver you are currently trying t install, on the following link you will be able to see it, look for the VGA:

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/ https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/

Also, a BIOS update to the latest version on the board is also recommended, here you have the files to do it:

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/ https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/

The graphics controller on your Intel processor is Intel® HD Graphics 530, on the following link you will find the latest version of the graphics driver for that controller, please install it manually:

Instructions to install the driver manually:

Hello,

Thanks for the answer.

I tried all vga drivers from the manufacturer of the board, and Intel drivers from 2015 to the last of 2016. I have always the same result.

My motherboard bios is the last one (2003).

The result of drivers 4501 and 4530 is a black screen. I also tried to change the driver of the monitor with generic driver, the same.

Regards.

Hello maxpayne13:

Thank you very much for providing that information.

The display port cable that you are using, is that a converter or adapter or is it a straight cable?

Also, you are able to boot to Windows normally, the problem just happens when you try to install the driver right?

Do you have the option to install the driver without using the remote desktop, and install it directly to the PC?

A BIOS update will be a good thing to do now, on the following link you will find the file to do it, latest version is 2003:

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/ https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z170-PRO-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/

Any questions, please let me know.

Hello,

The display port cable is straight, it's the cable I got with the screen.

I can boot Windows normally in safe mode, when the Intel driver are not installed. When I install the driver, I get the black screen when Windows activate the graphic card, I can guess it with the little sound of the new device detection.

I already try to install the driver without using the remote desktop, I use the remote desktop to connect my computer BECAUSE I have the black screen when the driver are installed and I can't use my computer without RDP.

I said I already have the latest bios for my board, version 2003. I already tried to reset all default parameters, but it has no effect.

Regards.

Hello maxpayne13:

Thank you very much for that information.

There has been different kind of graphics problems related to the Windows® 10 Anniversary Update, based on that, at this point, we can try to boot to Windows in safe mode and look for the option called "startup repair", in order to do that:

Get into: settings

Then look for: update and security

Then choose: recovery

Select: restart now

Select: Troubleshoot

Then: advanced options

And then: startup repair

This is almost the last step to try, another thing to do if that does not work as a last resource, will be to reinstall Windows® 10 from scratch.

To Genesys:

We will be more than glad to assist you in trying to fix the problem.

If you tried the troubleshoot steps provided on this thread and the issue persists, then for us to be able to start an investigation on this subject, please submit your inquiry on a new thread, the reason for that is that every scenario is different, even if the same product is being used, so, for us further assist you and also in order for us to help you with the specific problem the PC might have, please submit a new thread.

Let me apologize for any inconvenience.

Any questions, please let me know.

And if I tell you I already try to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch... because I have the problem on two computers now, my personal computer and a laptop Dell XPS 9350 with Intel HD 520... Dell already changed the motherboard with the processor and the integrated graphic card, and this is exactly the same problem.

I will try to reinstall Windows 10 on my personal computer from scratch.

Hello maxpayne13:

Thank you very much for that information.

I see, no problem, every PC is different, so please do that and let me know the results of re- installing Windows from scratch on your personal computer.

Now, once you do that, and if it works, then you can keep using the PC with the Microsoft drivers that get installed when you re-install Windows.

Also, if it works that way then you can keep the Microsoft drivers, or then try the graphics driver from ASUS first, and if it works that way there is no need to install the Intel graphics driver.

Please let me know the results of trying the steps above.

Any questions, please let me know.

So, I reinstalled WIndows 10 1607 on my personal computer from scratch. Effectively, the drivers are now installed without black screen. For the moment everything's OK. It's boring to loose all the softwares and reinstall it one by one because of a graphic card change..

The problem stay present on the laptop. Dell warranty works on it, but after many reinstallation of Windows, it's always the same. They change the whole motherboard with the processor and RAM, it doesn't change anything.

Hello maxpayne13:

Perfect, it is great to hear the problem with your personal computer was resolved, and yes, we understand it is a slow procedure to install all the software one by one, but it was the next thing to do to isolate the issue.

In regard to the laptop:

What is the model of it?

Do you know the model of the processor on it?

Any questions, please let me know.

Hello,

The model of the laptop is a Dell XPS 9350. The processor is a i7 6500U. The integrated graphic card is a Intel HD 520.

I try to install the driver with Windows 8.1, still the same. It seems it's not the fault of the OS, but maybe Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 core are a bit similar...

Regards.

Hello maxpayne13:

Thank you very much for that information.

In this case, try the following driver for the laptop, look for the one that says video:

Dell Driver:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/cr/en/crbsdt1/product-support/product/xps-13-9350-laptop/drivers/advanced http://www.dell.com/support/home/cr/en/crbsdt1/product-support/product/xps-13-9350-laptop/drivers/advanced

Since you already try 4501 and 4530, and the problem remains, you can also try the following beta driver, it is version 4539:

https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26347/eng/15.40.4539%20(Beta).exe https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26347/eng/15.40.4539%20(Beta).exe

Also you can always use the Microsoft drivers by doing a Windows update, or use the ones that get installed when you installed Windows from scratch.

Once you tried the steps above, if the issue continues, then the next thing to do will be to get in contact with Dell again, to see if they can replace the laptop, or to see if maybe they can replicate the issue in order to try to find a possible fix for it.

Any questions, please let me know.

Hello,

Same problem with Dell Windows 10 from scratch, always the black screen when the driver is installing.

Dell will send me an other computer, they don't understand the problem. Me too anyway.

Hello maxpayne13:

Thank you very much for sharing that information.

Yes, at this point it seems to be a hardware problem, so the replacement will be the best option to do.

We are glad to hear that Dell will be able to replace it for you, and hopefully it should work properly.

Hello,

No, I don't think it's a hardware problem, because the whole motherboard and CPU was changed one time before.

I think it's a bug between graphic chipset and the drivers, but I can't explain it more.

Regards.

Hello maxpayne13:

I see, yes, it could also be related to a bug between graphic chipset and the drivers, but hopefully with the computer Dell is going to send you the problem will not happen anymore and it should work properly.
