what was the problem with G3258s, Non-Z boards, and their BIOSes?

in the thread , someone speaking on behalf of Intel says

This message was posted on behalf of Intel Corporation

Hello:

According to our information, since this is a problem related to the microcode of the BIOS, the option in order to fix this issue will be to check with the manufacturer of the board, in order to verify if they developed a BIOS version that will be fully operational with the microcode of the processor.

To Smokey:

I just wanted to check if the information previously posted on this thread was useful for you and if you need further assistance.

Any questions, please let me know.

Alberto

what exactly was the problem with these non-Z boards? was it the ability to OC?

sorry if this comes off as a bit perturbed-sounding, but i'm frustrated that it seems that this is the only reason i couldn't (and still can't) install Win10 on my B85. the very last build before RTM was released could sustain multi-week x264 encode sessions (+complex video filter chains) as well as game with complete stability.

the whole point of buying a Pentium is for the reason of frugality. the (at the time $20+ ...as much as 33% more) Z motherboard tax defeats that a lot. my use case was very thread-limited, so the 2-3x budget of an i5 or greater K series was completely unjustified

so please, are there legitimate reasons you thought there were problems with all of these motherboards? mine hadn't had a BIOS update in 1.5 years or so (and i'm pretty sure many others hadn't either), so it seems users didn't have a problem, either.

Hello plonk420,

My apologies for the inconvenience.

I will check on the thread you mentioned, in the meantime I would like to check a couple of thing regarding your system configuration;

  • What is your motherboard model?
  • In the past, were you able to install Windows® 10?

Regards,

Amy C.

Gigabyte B85M-DS3H

yeah, i think i'd installed it a couple of times during the Insider's Preview, not quite sure the reason (i think i'd gotten a new HDD?)... but with one exception--banner ads on Imgur BSODing in IE--was stable as a rock. i was even able to Hybrid Physx (AMD HD7790 on 1x PCI-E slot, Nvidia GT430 on 16x slot) first attempt (ever), and it worked and was stable for a multi-hour gaming session.

regarding BIOS release dates, there'd been 1 year and nearly 2 months since the last BIOS update (2014/07/04 to 2015/08/25)

also, performance on Imgur got fixed during the course of the Preview

multiple edits later: found my install attempts:

/thread/114321 plonk420, thank you for the patience.

At the moment I have not been able to find any information that can affect this processor and the Windows® 10 installation. I see from http://www.gigabyte.us/Motherboard/GA-B85M-DS3H-rev-11# support-dl GA-B85M-DS3H (rev. 1.1) | Motherboard - GIGABYTE, that Windows® 10 is fully supported so there should not be any issue while installing this operating system. I would like to know; have you tried installing a different operating system? Does the issue persists with that particular operating system?

Windows 7 runs just fine. i've been running 7 stably since 10 went RTM around July 29, 2015 and wouldn't install.

if you look at that link to Gigabyte you pasted, it says "Update CPU microcode for win10 support with Pentium AE." this disables OCing as previously mentioned. however, Windows 10 worked perfectly fine up until RTM.

here's more posts and workarounds (scarily involving deleting mcupdate_GenuineIntel.dll).

All the information from our end is indicating that a BIOS update should address this matter, at this stage I would recommend getting in contact with Gigabyte for more information on their BIOS files.

but you guys (Intel) were the ones that made the change!

don't you have some changelogs or coder/engineers notes as to why you changed the CPU microcode you sent to Microsoft for release? a big company such as Intel with as many software engineers working on many projects doesn't make changes without commenting in the code or some organized documentation as to what changes are made and why. if i'm to destroy my whole reason to get the motherboard and CPU i got, it better be for a good reason.

/thread/114321 plonk420, I understand your point of view, but as mentioned before my recommendation getting in contact with Gigabyte for more information on their BIOS files. Have you tried to get in contact with them?

This is what Gigabyte says:

Question:i'm trying to run Windows 10. i was in the beta, and it ran almost perfectly (better the closer it got to release date). however the moment the first retail version launched, i couldn't install it. see the errors mentioned in https://communities.intel.com/message/473951# 473951 https://communities.intel.com/message/473951

i bought this B85 and G3258 specifically to OC, and Intel says there's a BIOS problem and that i need to update to install Windows 10. they're pointing at you.

whose fault is this and why do i need to flash my BIOS, removing my overclocking abilities?

Answer:

Dear [my name],

It is Intel(R). They changed this in the micro code. The B/Q series was always meant for the business sector with no OC functions. The H series would allow OC CPU but not the memory. The Z series would allow OC CPU and memory. Thank you.

Thanks for this.

From my end I would like to share with you that overclocking can be achieved with unlock desktop processors which from our end are named with an "X" or a "K" at the end of the model numeration. Regarding the Windows® 10 installation, I recommend pushing for a BIOS update, the microcode should be provided by your computer manufacturer. Bear in mind that the processor in your case is not operating system restricted, but the motherboard does have a restriction regarding the operating system installation that is why I recommend pushing for a BIOS update.

Amy C.

You, Intel, changed the microcode. You, Intel, made the restriction. Intel submitted mcupdate_GenuineIntel.dll to Microsoft for the RTM (first commercial release). Gigabyte even says so. And 10 worked before you made the change.

Also, the Pentium G3258 is unlocked. From Intel's press release/quick facts sheet for tech sites:

Hi plonk420

Please refer to the following web site for further information about Intel® Processor Support for Microsoft Windows® 10 https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/processors/000006105.html Intel® Processor Support for Microsoft Windows® 10. Your processor is a 4th Generation Intel® Core™ Processor.

I would also recommend that you run the Microsoft utility to check for compatibilitiy there could be a device on your system that may not be supported by Windows 10.

We didnt release any microcode update to prevent that from happening.

Thanks,

Ronny G
