Crash on welcome screen with HDMI cable

I have a W230SS notebook with i7-4700MQ CPU that has HD 4600 iGPU and GTX 860M dGPU, Windows 10 x64 installed.

When I start the computer with HDMI cable connected (to an external monitor) the image will show fine while Windows loads, but on the welcome/login screen it will restart Intel graphics driver forever, eventually crashing the whole Windows (BSOD). If I start with the cable unplugged (or if I unplug it while the driver restarts, but haven't crashed Windows yet), and wait a while until it "stabilizes", I can plug the HDMI cable and the system will work normally. Without Intel drivers installed (any version - either from Windows Update or recent ones from Intel direct), there is no crash. Can this be fixed somehow, so I wouldn't have to remember each time to unplug the HDMI cable when starting computer? It will wear out the port eventually. Previously I used VGA output, but my new monitor doesn't have VGA in.

Hello morvael:

In regard to your inquiry, I just wanted to let you know that Intel provides generic versions of drivers for general purposes and in order to try to fix possible graphics problems. These drivers might or might not work with your system since they are generic and probably they are not properly recognized by the notebook and that is the reason why it works fine without the Intel drivers.

Your computer manufacturer may have altered the features, changed the release date, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to your driver and based on that Intel recommends to use the customized drivers provided by the computer manufacturer since that drivers were released to work with your system specifically.

Any further questions about this matter, please let me know.

Regards

Sadly, there was only one version of drivers released by the manufacturer, compatible with Windows 8, since 10 didn't exist at the time. And in Windows 10 I have no chance to uninstall drivers pushed down my throat via Windows Update. It installs them so fast after uninstalling, that I can't use the hide/show update tool from Microsoft. What is strange is that they work completely fine, except just that one moment when welcome screen appears for the first time after boot.

Hello morvael:

Thank you very much for providing that information.

Yes, it seems to be the manufacturer in this case Clevo build the notebook to work with Windows® 8 specifically, so at the moment when you install Windows® 10 some problems might be expected.

If you want to try to install another driver, then what we can do is to disable the Windows automatic driver updates, that way after that you can un-install the current driver and try to install another one.

Un-install driver:

Install driver manually:

Disable Windows driver updates:

Just in case here is the latest driver for HD graphics 4600 controller, version 4501:

Thanks, I did all that already. By the way, the method published under the title "Disable Automatic Download of Drivers from Windows Update" on

http://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninstall-and-block-updates-and-drivers-on-windows-10/ http://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninstall-and-block-updates-and-drivers-on-windows-10/

no longer works in recent Windows 10 builds (1607), as the window was simplified and shows only "yes" and "no" answers. Drivers install with both settings.

I decided to just unplug the cable every time I start the machine, and to turn it off less frequently. In a few months I'll be buying a new computer and the problem will be gone.

Hello morvael:

Thank you very much for letting us know that information, we are sorry to hear the problem remains but the method you are using is a pretty good work around for this scenario, it is not the ideal but as long as it makes it work, then you can try that in the meantime.

And yes, if you are going to get a new computer that one should work with no problems.

Any other inquiry, do not hesitate in contact us again.
