Can anyone tell me what generated this message?

I often get this pop-up message regarding screen resolution along with a tone and momentary screen blank. Sometimes it happens repeatedly, and sometimes not. The message doesn't make sense, so I would like to find out what is producing it and possibly stop it. I can't tell if it is from a Windows7, Intel, or Dell message, but it looks like it is Intel generated due to the little logo in the corner.

The computer is a Dell Inspiron N7010.

Hello Bill_S,

Thank you for contacting the Intel community.

Do you have an external monitor that is connected to the laptop?

What is the processor model on this computer?

Does this happen only when you are browsing the web or when playing games, watching videos etc?

Perhaps you could try the following:

In the Intel graphics driver settings in the tray, right-click > graphics options > balloon notification > optimal resolution notification > disable"

Also, I suggest you to update all drivers from your computer manufacturer website, you should be able to get the proper drivers for your computer here:

There is no other monitor connected to the computer. The processor is Intel Core I5 M480.

I disabled the balloon pup-up, but the tone still sounds. I am not sure if this happens only when using a browser, but will take note.

Thanks for the reply

I ran the Dell driver update program and there was no update for the video offered.

Thank you for the information Bill_S, please see if installing the driver from the following link can help with this issue:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/22521/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-Driver-Windows-7-64-Windows-Vista-64-exe-?product=52952 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/22521/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-Driver-Windows-7-64-Windows-Vista-64-exe-?product=52952

Please bear in mind that the support for this processor is limited and this is basically the latest driver available for this processor, if you get an issue installing this driver try installing the driver https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005474.html manually.

It looks like this is the driver that is already installed on my computer.

Still having the problem.

In this case, try to use the recommended resolution on the screen resolution in Windows. If the recommended is there try to change it to a higher or lower resolution.

  1. Right click on the desktop and then select Screen Resolution.
  2. Click the drop-down list next to Resolution. Check for the resolution marked (recommended). This is your LCD monitor's native resolution—usually the highest resolution your monitor can support.

When I did right click on the desktop and selected screen resolution, I got another possible clue. As I was looking at that screen, the screen blanked again and the screen changed. The drop down list titled 'display' changed from a 1 display to a two display and then it changed back. The resolution stayed the same. I have captured the screen in one of the two situations, but will have to wait for another occurrence to give you both. When I do, I will send them along to you in hopes that it will tell you something more about the problem.

Attached are the two different screen resolution pop-ups seen when the display blanks. It cycles between the two.

Hope this gives you an idea about the problem.

In this case, I suggest you to change the resolution; the resolution on your system is 1600 x 900, you can see if there is one for 1280 x 960, if there is no such resolution then this is a limitation by your computer manufacturer.

I tried a resolution close to what you recommended and the problem remains the same.

The Intel graphics control recommends the higher one.

Also, do you have any idea why the display is changing back and forth from "1 moblile pc display" to "1|2. multiple monitors"?

In that case, even if you have the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/22521/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-Driver-Windows-7-64-Windows-Vista-64-exe-?product=52952 latest graphics driver I suggest you to uninstall it and if you have another graphics card driver installed on your laptop I suggest you to uninstall that driver as well and then install the Intel driver first, https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005474.html manually, once the Intel driver is installed, go ahead and install the other graphics card driver from your computer manufacturer website, you should be able to get it here:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/inspiron-17-n7010/drivers/advanced http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/inspiron-17-n7010/drivers/advanced

For your system I believe is the AMD ATI Radeon driver.
