Intel Graphics 520, play lags 4k video file!

Hi,

I can't play 4k video file on my Lenovo ThinkPad T560, it's always lag and low FPS.

I try to play 4k video file from http://4ksamples.com/elysium-2013-2160p-1-minute-sample-footage/ Elysium 2013 2160p - 1 Minute Sample Footage - Free 4K Sample Footage or http://4ksamples.com/ses-astra-uhd-test-1-2160p-uhdtv/ SES Astra UHD Test 1 2160p UHDTV Free 4K Sample Footage or any 4k video files

using from Windows Movies&TV, VLC, MPC-HC, K-Lite Codec Pack to PotPlayer,

PotPlayer perform best but still lag with average 10 FPS.

I've tried update my BIOS, Chipset, Graphic Card Driver from http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/th/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t560/downloads laptops and netbooks :: thinkpad t series laptops :: thinkpad t560 Lenovo PC Support

Still no improve.

I can play 4k content from Youtube just fine. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNJdPyoqt8U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNJdPyoqt8U)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNJdPyoqt8U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNJdPyoqt8Ubut only on mp4 not vp9 format, if video plays in vp9 format CPU usage will rise to 100% and video will lags.

I've attach Report from System Scan Utility below.

Hi pipeCh: Thank you very much for joining the Intel® Graphics communities. We are sorry to hear there are graphics problems with your laptop.

Remember that the Intel graphics drivers are generic, meaning they might or might not work with your system. That is why we always recommend to install the drivers provided by the manufacturer of the laptop, since they were customized in this case by Lenovo to work with that specific system. Did you installed both, Intel and Nvidia drivers?

If the problem persists after that, and since the processor works with the Intel® HD graphics 520 controller, we can also try driver version 4729:

Any further questions, please let me know.

Hi, Alberto

My laptop doesn't have Nvidia GPU and I've tried download and install https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26941/Graphics-Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-15-46-%3Fproduct%3D88355 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26941/Graphics-Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-15-46-?product=88355, still lag when play 4k video file.

Does this means Intel Graphics 520 or my laptop not powerful enough to play 4k video files?

Hi pipeCh: I tried to replicate the issue in our lab, I used a NUC and a laptop, both of them are working with Intel® HD Graphics 520, and I can confirm the video is lagging on both devices. So, in order to rule out a possible problem with the video itself, do you have another link to any other 4K sample that we can check?

Any questions, please let me know.

Hi, Alberto

I believe it's not video file because i've played these videos with another system, it's run well, anyway i've tried 2 more video from

still lagging.

Hi pipeCh: Thank you very much for providing those links, we really appreciate that and we apologize for all the lateness.

I ran the videos on the Intel® NUC6i3SYH that also works with the Intel® HD Graphics 520 and I was able to replicate the issue. The video related to Tomb Raider worked just fine, but that is an mp4 video. The ones in regard to Astra and Elysium were lagging, those are MKV videos, and the one related to Barcelona was also lagging and that one is a TS video.

So, we will do further research on this matter in order to try to find a possible solution, In order for us to be able to do that, please provide the information requested on the following link:

pipeCh: I just received some updates on this matter and we just wanted to verify if you have the option perhaps with your phone to maybe record a video where we can see the videos lagging and another video of when you are using 3rd party cards and there is no lagging at all? That will be really helpful for us to further assist you.

Any questions, please let me know.

pipeCh: I just received an update on the research we are doing on this matter and just to let you know the Intel® Skylake processors support HW acceleration of VP9 videos at 4k only if it is 24fps, higher frame count will go via Software so depending on the video this would be expected behavior.

Regarding HEVC and AVC videos, we observe the same lag when running the video http://4ksamples.com/elysium-2013-2160p-1-minute-sample-footage/ http://4ksamples.com/elysium-2013-2160p-1-minute-sample-footage/ on 3rd party hardware (Nvidia) thus suggesting this is not a driver issue.

Is there any way that you can provide a recording of the same video running fine on 3rd party hardware? This is in order to confirm that it works fine on a different platform.

Any questions, please let me know.

Alberto,

any updates on this? Chrome is now blocking all hardware acceleration of VPx video on anything below Kaby lake because of the ongoing issues with stuttering.

Bug is here (cannot be publicly viewed)

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=616318 https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=616318

if you go to chrome://gpu affected processors will show a line that says "VPx decoding is too slow on Intel Broadwell, Skylake, and CherryView", and thus hardware rendering is disabled.

Many 1080p youtube videos are now causing super high CPU usage and stuttering, causing employees to think newer computers are "slow".

Hello aferguson1209

I think it would be better if you report this on a separate thread, preferably using /thread/77761 this format so we can capture all the technical details, because even though the symptom is the same (i.e. lagging video playback) the root cause can be different. Per example, in this thread we are focusing mainly on HEVC (h.265) 4K videos, while in your case the target is VP9 playback.

Note: Intel® Skylake processors support HW acceleration of VP9 videos at 4k only if it is 24fps, higher frame count will go via Software.

Ronald M.

Ronald,

I understand, and im currently responding in a thread with chromium developers to see if we can isolate any variables on that end first before proceeding here.

That said, my question was regarding 1080P video, at 60FPS, unknown bitrate.

For example, I have a laptop with a 4900MQ, and at 1080P60 the following video is a walk in the park. 20-25% CPU usage max, 2.0.- 2.5 ghz max clock.

On a 6500u, same video. 80% CPU usage or more, CPU at max turbo available. The video is a stuttering, jittery mess. Showing statistics on the youtube video player shows many dropped frames on the 6500u machine, but very few on the 4900MQ machine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDkWwX3Id98&t=409s I realize there is a delta in processing power there, but just some napkin math should tell me that 20% of 4900MQ != 70% of 6500u. Idle usage on either machine is relatively low.

Here is a link to a "problem" video
