Hi,
I have a Sony Vaio with w10 and HD Graphics 4000 card and have upgraded using the Intel Driver update Utility since I had an issue and could see that there was an exclamation mark in the unit controller. I have now driver 10.18.10.4653 installed but the unit is now stopped (code 45). The laptop is using Microsoft Basic Displaydriver and I fail to get it to use the Intel one. Help please!

Hello Sandshagen,
I understand the Intel graphics controller is showing error code 45 in Device Manager.
Let me apologize for any inconvenience this issue may be causing to you.
In order to help you better I would like to gather more information about the configuration you have in the computer. Please attach to this thread the .txt file the Intel® System Support Utility will generate https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility
To attach a file, you must click "Use Advanced Editor" on the upper right hand corner of the response box, then the "attach" option will appear on the bottom right hand corner of the response box.
Regards,
Fred D.

Hello Sandshagen,
Thanks for the information you sent to me.
I would like you to try installing different version of the graphics driver. Please download it from this link https://downloadmirror.intel.com/25977/eng/win64_153343.4425.zip https://downloadmirror.intel.com/25977/eng/win64_153343.4425.zip
As soon as the driver has been downloaded on the keyboard press WinLogo key + r, then type in devmgmt.msc, double click on Display Adapters -> Intel HD Graphics -> Driver tab -> Uninstall -> Select the check box Delete the driver software for this device -> OK, restart the computer, and then reinstall the driver I provided with the steps that are on this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1KzoQDjMMY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1KzoQDjMMY
If issue persists you can try accessing the BIOS of the laptop and resetting it to its default settings. Hi,
just an update...the new driver installs ok as far as I can tell but the graphic card remains stopped. I will try the BIOS option next, but what may have caused this to have to go to this length?
What would be the next step - to replace it? With which card with similar features?

You can't replace the "graphics card", the GPU resides together with CPU on one chip, a so called SoC - system on a chip.
Best choice would be to roll back to original OS (assuming you had no trouble then).

Hello Sandshagen,
I am sorry to hear issue persists.
Another troubleshooting step would be reinstalling the operating system that came with the computer. If issue happens even with the operating system that came with the computer then the issue would be hardware related. You can reinstall the operating system using the Sony* Recovery Discs. This link will show you how to get them https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/40648/~/how-to-purchase-recovery-discs-for-your-vaio-computer https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/40648/~/how-to-purchase-recovery-discs-for-your-vaio-computer
