Intel HD Graphics 530 lags in 4K on Zenbook Pro UX501VW

Hello!

I have an Asus Zenbook Pro UX501VW with i7-6700HQ, 16GB of RAM, GTX 960M, 512 PCIe SSD and UHD display. From the moment I bought this laptop, it is constantly lagging.

By lagging I mean: Windows 10 UI (animations when Start is on fullscreen for example) is around 30FPS, sometimes even below. The performance in browser is just as poor: scrolling is between 15 and 45 FPS (The FPS was measured in Google Chrome with a plugin). Playing 4K 60FPS on YouTube is impossible. The sound is not synchronized with the video and the video itself lags.

I have a clean installed Windows 10 Home with the latest drivers (now running Intel HD Graphics version 4664).

Could you help me? It's really annoying for such an expensive ultrabook.

I also contacted Asus but they told me to go in service. I still believe that there aren't any hardware faults.

Thank you!

After more tests, with 1 Gbps internet connection, it doesn't lag anymore on Youtube on 4K@60FPS, but the Windows 10 UI still lags very much and it's super annoying for such an expensive ultrabook.

I also sent it to Asus Service and the guys told me that my laptop is perfectly running. It doesn't have any issue.

Any ideas?

Hello PavelProdaniuc,

I understand that video lags on your Zenbook Pro UX501VW laptop.

Let me apologize for any inconvenience this issue may be causing to you.

In order to help you better I would like to gather more information about the configuration you have in the computer. Please attach to this thread the .txt file the Intel® System Support Utility will generate https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility

To attach a file, you must click "Use Advanced Editor" on the upper right hand corner of the response box, then the "attach" option will appear on the bottom right hand corner of the response box.

Let me also know if you are using the UHD display in Clone Mode, Extended Desktop or Single Display.

Regards,

Here it is.

"I understand that video lags on your Zenbook Pro UX501VW laptop." Yes and no. I mean, the windows 10 UI lags and doesn't run smoothly on 4K (but it does run smoothly on 1080P or 2K). For example, Ubuntu runs much more smoother than Windows 10 but still not perfect.

I'm using the laptop in single display mode. I think it's a problem with the compatibility between the UHD display, Windows 10 and my iGPU (HD 530). So I suppose the video driver.

Edit: In order to be even more correct, my entire Windows 10 suffers of lag on 4K. Besides the W10 UI and the scrolling in browser, the scrolling through PDFs in browser doesn't run well too.

Hello PavelProdaniuc,

Thanks for the additional information you sent to me.

I would like you to try reinstalling some of the computer drivers in a specific order.

Please install this driver first, and then restart the computer http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin10/Chipset/Chipset_Intel_Skylate_Win10_64_VER101111.zip http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin10/Chipset/Chipset_Intel_Skylate_Win10_64_VER101111.zip

Install this other driver, and then restart the computer one more time http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin10/MEI/MEI_Intel_15M_Win10_64_VER11001169.zip http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin10/MEI/MEI_Intel_15M_Win10_64_VER11001169.zip

Please download this graphics driver https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26669/eng/win64_154516.4627.zip https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26669/eng/win64_154516.4627.zip

As soon as the graphics driver has been downloaded on the keyboard press WinLogo key + r, then type in devmgmt.msc, double click on Display Adapters -> Intel HD Graphics -> Driver tab -> Uninstall -> Select the check box Delete the driver software for this device -> OK, restart the computer, and then reinstall the graphics driver with the steps that are on this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1KzoQDjMMY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1KzoQDjMMY

If issue persists run Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool and let me know if the test passes or not https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool

Thank you very much Fred !!

My laptop is alive! I don't have tearing anymore, the scrolling is perfect now, most of the Windows animations have been fixed and also my YouTube 4K playback is better now. The Chipset Driver was the real problem.

However, I would like to mention other 2 "problems" which are still present. The animation of Windows Start Menu (when I enter and exit the start menu (my start menu is on fullscreen)) and the scrolling in PDF in browser are still a bit laggy. However, 95% of problems have been fixed and I'm very glad!

I think the laptop is now fully working. Maybe that slight lag on PDF scrolling is just because of the huge resolution and HD 530 is struggling to render the content. I'm just guessing, I don't know for sure. Maybe there is a fix for this too.

The test passed without any trouble. Full Pass.

I tested my laptop more and, in particular, the start menu animation and scrolling in PDF in Opera/Chrome are still laggy. If I open the PDF in Edge, I can scroll perfectly through it. However, in Opera and Chrome I can't. I'm sure that something is still unsolved (seems to be tricky).

So most of my laptop is fixed, but these two big issues are still present and hurting my eyes. I can't stand them. I hope you can give me some advices to fully fix my laptop.

First of all, I really thank you for your patience you have with me.

I filmed a short video to show you exactly the problem. I want you to clearly see those two issues.

Link: https://mega.nz/%23%219B5VVaCD https://mega.nz/# !9B5VVaCD!2gi7Yu8Mo-VNFzXuhRmuFWBk7FeCtefsQlCxbQX5VUI

Basically, in the video, I did the test on 4K and after on 1080P. On 1080P everything is perfect.

The laptop is plugged in to AC and set on High Performance.

And yes. The issues are still there after updating my driver to 4729. I have updated the GTX as well, but the browsers are running on Intel (for battery), not on the dedicated graphics. But remember: everything else is running smooth. Scrolling in browser is just fine, etc.

Thank you.

Hello PavelProdaniuc,

Thanks for the additional information you sent to me.

If the issue does not happen in Microsoft* Edge then the problem might be related to the browser itself. There are a couple of additional troubleshooting steps you can perform in Google Chrome. Please check the troubleshooting steps that are suggested on this link http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-3207237/google-chrome-lags-scrolling-windows.html http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-3207237/google-chrome-lags-scrolling-windows.html

The issue is still there. I've tried disabling hardware acceleration and other tricks but nothing seems to do the job.

Somehow, I expected these tricks not to work because the windows start menu animation also lags. It's not something from the browser.

Something is blocking the performance of the laptop.

I'm still very confident that Intel HD Graphics 530 can handle without any trouble the UHD resolution.

My scrolling in browser on websites, watching 4K on Youtube, etc run perfectly smooth and right, but those 2 issues are weird and it's not normal. This tells me that there's still something inside which is not running well.

My GTX is running perfectly as well. In games (I know this laptop is not for games, but I did tests), it performs just fine. The FPS is exactly how much it should be. The tricky thing (problem) is at HD 530.

Hello PavelProdaniuc,

Is it possible for you to check if issue persists or not in Single Display on an external monitor?

We are currently debugging an issue with lagging animations in Windows CUI (Internal Bug ID 1406372685). So far it looks to be more of an OS issue, but let's wait for debug to complete their analysis.

Examples:

Please also try running Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool and let me know if the utility finds or not any issue. You can download it from this link https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool

Hello Fred.

I connected to my Zenbook a Dell U2414H. It's not 4K, but the resizing of Slack or LibreOffice Calc is just the same as in the first video. I filmed two more videos for you (the first one is filmed at 720P@60FPS and the second is filmed at 1080P@30FPS). My DSLR camera cannot film 1080P@60FPS, but the problem can be seen very clearly.

Here are the links:

1. https://mega.nz/%23%21JJ5FjKbI https://mega.nz/# !JJ5FjKbI!ZqWxgFFCgI03FdGGJB3GkYmVUvl0V0rAVrmL2w0NZD8

I hope the problem will be solved in some way. It's very annoying to use a laptop in this way.

I run the diagnostic tool as well and it passed without any trouble. Every step went smoothly.

Thank you!

Hello PavelProdaniuc,

Thanks for the additional videos you sent to me.

It seems to be that you are having the same lagging issue that is described in the YouTube videos.

At this point what I can recommend is waiting until our debugging team finds the root cause of the problem.

As a workaround the best option would be using a screen resolution of 2K or FullHD.

I will post an update about this issue as soon as it is available.

Regards,
