The only thing that I cannot do according to everything I have read is set this.

PCIe Storage Dev on Port 9 to RST Controlled

Mine is grayed out and I cannot change it, it is currently set to Not RST Controlled.

I think this is the only thing I need to sort out to get this working,

Gigabye B360 Aorus Gaming 3 WiFi Motherboard with BIOS v F7

Optane running on the M2P_16G

M.2 SSD running on the M2P_32G (this is my main drive so I want it to stay in the faster slot)

Sata 2TB Drive (this is the secondary drive I am going to accelerate)

Not sure what else you might need.

Help would be appreciated.

NoteSecondary/Data drive acceleration:
  • With the latest Intel Optane memory and Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST) applications (Version 16.0.2.1086 or later), the Secondary/Data drive can be accelerated with Intel Optane memory modules. See https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000026040.html Software and Platform Support for Intel® Optane™ Memory for complete details on which Processor/Chipsets support this capability
  • An update to the System BIOS may be required to upgrade the Intel® RST Pre-OS UEFI Driver version to 16.0.2.3402 or later. Consult your motherboard vendor for the proper system BIOS version for this support.
  • All additional system requirements and BIOS settings are the same as noted in the guide above.
  • Find more information on https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000027987.html Secondary/Data SATA Drive Acceleration with Intel® Optane™ Memory.

After this process please try to boot to your operating system (OS).

We recommend you to update to the latest version of the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) User Interface and Driver that can be found here:

Hi Josh

I have installed it as per page 41 and checked it against your own Intel instructions and everything is fine except for the grayed out option I mentioned.

When I tried to install the SetupRST.exe it refused to install because I already had the Optane software installed instead, I figured they were interchangeable.

I'm sorry but I am not pulling out hardware from the machine and destroying hours worth of cabling, lighting and hard tube watercooling placement unless it is proven to be necessary to fix the issue, certainly not to take photos of it.

Please tell me where to find what you require from the Bios and/or Windows if the information below is not enough.

Motherboard = B360 Aorus Gaming w/WiFi CVNi running the latest (flashed it myself last night) F7 Bios build

Intel Optane Memory 16GB M.2 PCIe 2280 MPN: MEMPEK1W016GAXT this is in the designated M2P_16G slot

Secondary Hard Drive = Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM006 2TB 64MB 6GB/S Sata 3 (nothing special here)

The SSD which serves as C:/ is in the other M.2 slot which is designated as M2P_32G Crucial MX500 500GB M.2 2280 SSD (CT500MX500SSD4)

The SSD and Secondary HDD are plugged into Sata2 and Sata3 slots

The rest of the hardware seems irrelevant to me in regards to this issue.

Hello Paradoxnz.

Thank you for your reply.

We are concern if after following all the steps on your motherboard user guide you are still not able to enable the Optane™ memory installed in the M2P_16G connector by setting up the PCIe Storage Dev on Port 9 to RST Controlled, this is not normal and you should get in contact with your motherboard manufacturer to clarify if there is any other setting that you may need to change on your BIOS in order to be able to properly set up your Optane memory.

In order to check how your operating system (OS) recognizes the Optane memory please access to the "Disk Management" and let us know if the Optane is detected as a storage device. If your Optane memory was not detected on the Disk Management please access to the "Device manager" and provide us with screenshots in order to review if there is any problem with drives or how your OS is detecting this device.

The Bios version F7 does not specify if it includes an update in order to support the acceleration of a secondary hard drive using Optane memory and we advise you to check on this with Gigabyte too.

Another way to get the Optane memory marking information is from the product box itself, remember that this information is necessary to verify your warranty status in case that a warranty replacement is needed.

You cannot have both the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) User Interface and the Optane software installed on the same OS.

We will be looking forward to your reply.

Hi Josh

Yes I agree with you, it should be working and it is strange that it is not.

I have submitted a Support Query to Gigabyte as per your advice to ask them the same question and to make sure that the F7 Bios supports the Acceleration of the secondary drive.

Attached is a screen shot of the current Disk Management and the Optane box.

I will supply the rest of the information when I hear back from Gigabyte.

Hello Paradoxnz.

Thank you for your reply.

Based on the screenshot you shared with us, the disk 2 on the "Disk Management" tool seems to be the Intel® Optane™ Memory Series 16GB, M.2 80mm PCIe 3.0, 20nm, 3D Xpoint being detected as an SSD storage device.

We will be looking forward to your reply in case that you need further assistance.

Hi Josh

Based on the screenshot you shared with us, the disk 2 on the "Disk Management" tool seems to be the Intel® Optane™ Memory Series 16GB, M.2 80mm PCIe 3.0, 20nm, 3D Xpoint being detected as an SSD storage device.

Is this bad?

Is it not supposed to do that?

How do I fix it?

Is this the cause of the issue with the Optane software not seeing it.

So far the answers from Gigabyte and less than useless, nothing worth posting back here yet.

Hello Paradoxnz.Thank you for your reply.

No, it is not a problem at all this seems to be related to the same previously discussed BIOS issue of not been able to enable the Optane™ memory installed in the M2P_16G connector by setting up the PCIe Storage Dev on Port 9 to RST Controlled.

Actually from our point of view if the device is being shown in the Disk Management tool as a normal storage device means that the Optane™ is okay and prepared to be used as soon as the other required settings are set up on your system.

We will be looking forward to your reply in case that you need further assistance.Best regards,Josh B.Intel Customer Support.

I have given up on this.

Neither you, the makers of it can tell me WHY its not showing up on your software.

And the Motherboard maker cannot tell me why its not working in the designated slot nor why the BIOS setting I need cannot be set.

The module can rot in its slot unused, its not worth any more of my time.

Hello Paradoxnz.

Thank you for your reply.

We understand your frustration regarding the issue you are experiencing, this problem seems to be related to the same previously discussed BIOS issue of not been able to enable the Optane™ memory installed in the M2P_16G connector by setting up the PCIe Storage Dev on Port 9 to RST Controlled.

We encourage you to keep pushing for a BIOS update from your motherboard manufacturer in order to try to solve this issue.

Please take into consideration that your manual includes the following statement:

"An Optane™ memory cannot be used to accelerate an M.2 PCIe SSD."

And since your OS is installed on an M.2 SSD the system recognizes this one as the one you want to accelerate and the error is displayed on the Optane software.

As a last attempt to try to solve the issue you are reporting without waiting for the BIOS update you can try the following guide:

*Please, notice that this guide was created using Intel® products only and we cannot assure you that it may work if you have components from different manufacturers.

In order to perform a Windows fresh installation and a secondary/data drive acceleration in a system with a primary/booting M.2 drive with a system BIOS that is compatible with secondary/data drive acceleration and starting in RST premium follow the steps below:

Intel recommends that a full and verified backup of data be performed before attempting to apply this process; see "The Importance of a Backup Solution" at

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/server-products/000007914.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/server-products/000007914.html.

• Access to your system BIOS and access to the following settings:

Peripherals / Intel®RST RAID driver

Once here check if the M.2 drive and the Intel® Optane™ Memory are detected properly.

• Turn your PC off and disconnect all the other hard drive devices from your system including the Optane and check that your M.2 drive is the only storage device in the system.

• Start the Windows setup process and select the Custom: Install Windows only (advanced option) and select the Load driver option:

• Download the driver from the following link and unzip the file on the USB thumb drive:

https://downloadmirror.intel.com/27985/eng/f6flpy-x64.zip https://downloadmirror.intel.com/27985/eng/f6flpy-x64.zip

• Click on browse and select the folder where the drivers are located and the installer is going to load the list of available drivers.

• You are going to be offered with 2 options, please, select the Intel® chipset SATA/PCIe RST Premium Controller

• After loading the necessary drivers it should show your M.2 storage device.

• Continue the setup process as usual by selecting the drive that you want to use as primary and accept if the system requests to create more partitions.

• After the setup process is completed boot to your new Windows installation and completes the required information to access your desktop and turn your PC off.

• Connect your Intel® Optane™ Memory and the secondary SATA drive that you want to accelerate and turn your system back on.

• Check on the Disk manager tool that your drives are detected properly.

• Download and install the following software: https://downloadmirror.intel.com/27985/eng/SetupOptaneMemory.exe https://downloadmirror.intel.com/27985/eng/SetupOptaneMemory.exe

• Restart your system as requested at the end of the setup process.

• Access to the Intel® Optane™ Memory User Interface and check the acceleration settings.
