Trying to update video driver and current video driver incorrectly reported as newer.

Hi,

  • Brand and Model: Lenovo ThinkCentre M91P
  • CPU Model # : Intel Core i5 2400
  • Operating System: Windows 7 SP1
  • Current graphics driver version: 8.15.10.2622 w/ driver date of 10/01/2012.

Video game (Spore), launched for the first time, reported that I was running an older video driver and recommended that I update.

Downloaded what I think is latest video driver for my system from Intel (version 15.28.24.4229 with a release date of 6/5/2015). Ran installer and received the following Question / Warning:

This computer currently contains driver versions newer than the versions you are about to install. Are you sure you want to overwrite the following drivers with the older versions?

  • Intel Display Audio (6.16.0.3154)
  • Intel HD Graphics (8.15.10.2622)

This strikes me as odd as the current driver appears to be an older version.

I went to Lenovo's website and downloaded what seems like the latest video driver for my system (version 8.15.10.2752 with a release date of 2012-06-11). I tried to install this driver -- which also appears to be newer than the one currently installed -- and received the same Question / Warning as above.

Two questions come to my mind:

  1. Why is it that the my system would report that the current drivers are newer than the drivers I'm looking to install?
  2. Is it safe to install the drivers from either Intel or Lenovo and, if so, are there any special steps that I should take in doing so?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Stefan3D,

Taking your cue, I manually installed the latest Intel Graphics Driver following the instructions here ( http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005474.html). Rebooted system as per direction. System seems to perform fine with new driver; Spore no longer complains at launch running an older video driver and recommending that I update. Thanks for your help.

Hello Aulis,

Thank you for contacting the Intel community.

Please bear in mind that your best contact support for any question is with your computer manufacturer which is Lenovo, they are more familiar with your system and how all the components interact with each other.

Intel provides http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ generic versions of drivers for general purposes. Your http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/oems.html computer manufacturer may have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to your driver.

In this case, it is most likely that your system has a customized driver, so if you install the Intel® generic driver you might lose functions and cause other technical issues.

You can try uninstalling the driver you have installed and install the latest driver from your computer manufacturer website.

Now, if you are interested in installing the Intel® HD Graphics driver, you can work around the error by first uninstalling the manufacturer's driver, then installing the Intel® Graphics Driver manually.

Please check how to http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005598.html Uninstall the Intel® Graphics Driver and Intel® Display HDMI/Audio Driver and check how to http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005629.html Manually Install an Intel® Graphics Driver in Windows® 10 and Windows 8*/8.1*

I hope this can help.

Best regards,

Ivan.
