Re: intel nic drivers 19.3 huge 6000+ dpc latency spike once a few secs

Same problem here for 7265 AC when high transfer rate over wifi (~20MB/s) especially when uploading. It's Dell Latitude E5550 with i7-5600U running Windows 10 x64 and latest 18.20.0 drivers.

How did you identify that the Intel(R) Drivers are responsible for this issue? DPC latency that high could indicate a problem with the BIOS. Please check with the BIOS manufacturer for any updates. As you know, DPC is the part of Windows* that handles driver efficiency. Usually, a driver that is taking longer than normal to process, may prevent other drivers from being processed in time. There are thirdy-party tools out there that you can use to identify more accurartely the problematic driver that is causing the latency such is the LatencyMon by Resplendence*. 1st screenshot showing latency with low WiFi traffic.

2nd screenshot showing latency with high RX WiFi traffic.

3rd screenshot showing latency with high TX WiFi traffic. You can clearly see latency spikes and music playing trough winamp is distorted every couple of seconds. Also 2 screenshots showing that ndis.sys is offending driver.

I think it's clear that something associated with WiFi is causing latency problems.

I have Windows 10 location services completely turned off. The same for p2p updates.

Hello SotY,

Regarding this issue, please change the channel on the router to see if an alternative channel provides a cleaner signal.

1 - How far are you from the router?

2 - Could please decribe what type of problem is the latency causing?

Another thing that could be cause latency is the amount of programs running in the background. Try running a ping test using a much larger packet size in order to get more accurate readings. If your wireless card is the one that came installed by factory, we recommend that you contact your computer manufacturer first: http://www.intel.com/support/oems.htm listing of laptop manufacturer's websites. and check if they have any thing specifically for this adapter. Changing channel doesn't help and additionally my router is the only one running at 5GHz in the range of wifi card. Latency spikes causes distortion in sound playing at the same time (winamp, windows media player, mpc-hc for movies). I don't have any high demanding apps running in the background and on my screenshots you can see that cpu usage is very low when latency spikes happen. Laptop is around 20ft from router in straight line with no walls blocking signal. I can put laptop 3 ft from router and spikes will be the same. And it was also like that with previous version of drivers. Weird thing is that distortion in sound is much worse witch high TX traffic. There is some distortion with RX traffic but happens every 10 seconds or something like that and with TX with almost every 1-2s. I don't understand why should I contact computer manufacturer? It's Intel's wifi card and intel's drivers. Dell doesn't provide any custom made drivers for this card. Also this is regular oem card not modified in any way by Dell.

Based on your later information we are going to investigate on it further. The TX traffic is high usually when big amount of data is sent over the internet and RX during downloading or media streaming. If you are not using any bluetooth connected device, you may desable your Bluetooth as they use the same antennas used by your Wi-Fi and this can directly impact on the performance. Ambient interferences can also be the cause of high latency or jitter such as fluorecent lighting, wall paower lines, high power devices...etc.

Have you updated your router firmware?

Have you tried another player to see if the same thing happens?

Here are some tips you can try:

  • If applicable, disable 80211.b/g compatibility mode in the router. 802.11N routers often support the older 802.11 standards (a, b, g); supporting the old standards prevents the 802.11N from running as fast as it should, as the router has to periodically switch modes to check for older devices.
  • Try moving the router to different places, other electornic devices may cause interference that can impact the radio link.
  • Eliminate sources of interference. Malfunctioning equipment can generate a lot of RF.
  • Disable "Automatic Channel Mode". Some Routers have a mode that automatically looks for channels with less interference and will automatically change. While this sounds like a good idea, you will get a spike in latency when it does change its mind about which channel it wants to use. Experiment with different channels.
  • The amount of equipment connected can also impact depending on the type of router.

I have Asus RT-N66U router with latest firmware installed but I can verify if spikes happen with different router that I have at work.

Audio player has nothing to do with it because it happens with all audio sources (winamp, windows media player, mpc-he). Also I don't think that any radio interference have something to do with dpc latency spikes. Interference can lower wifi throughput or make network latency higher but not dpc latency. And I know what TX an RX means I generated high RX and TX to show you screenshots with latency spikes during specific transfer over wifi. And simple googling shows that I'm not the only one who has problems with dpc latency on different Intel wireless and wired network cards. Some people had luck with different version of Intel drivers so I guess that's main reason dpc talency spikes happen in first place. But there is not lot of choices for 7265 AC and Windows 10 right now. I have Bluetooth mouse so I will try to disable bluetooth controller and check it that helps. But bluetooth is also using Intel drivers so if that's the case we are going back to the roots of this problem: intel drivers.
