Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 cant change brightness in windows 10.

I installed windows 10 using the free upgrade from microsoft and had no problems. Due to my computer running excruciatingly slow I reinstalled windows 10.

Since then I cant set the brightness on my laptop. I can change the setting temporarily but it changes back on its own. The apply button on the display properties setting window is greyed out. I asked online and it was suggested that i uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver on the device manager screen which i did and this made no difference. I have checked for updates on the display adapter properties page and it told me that I am up to date.

Is this due to there being no windows 10 update for the Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000? If this is the case why did it work fine the first time I installed windows 10?

This is causing me big problems as the screen is so dim it is nearly unreadable.

Any ideas?

Download driver 9.17.10.4459 from http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=9.17.10.4459 Microsoft Update Catalog (99MB / 64 bit or 59MB / 32 bit)

Create a system restore point

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/instantanswers/e6bbddb0-9db4-4d88-9063-42c52c79a96e/create-a-system-restore-point

Install the aforementioned driver via "have disk method" as described at:

http://www.windowscentral.com/how-install-intel-beta-graphics-drivers-surface

(ignore prolog about MS surface, treat CAB like ZIP)

Thanks for this, good clear instructions.

Done it all but still hasn't worked. The apply button is still greyed out and the screen keeps reverting back to very dim. The driver has installed successfully as seen on the screenshot.

You mean the button in the Intel control panel?

Right-click on desktop and try brightness slider in Windows' display settings instead.

I have been using the brightness slider in the Windows' display settings. I can move the slider but the apply button is greyed out.

I also tried the Intel control panel (by right clicking on and choosing display properties) and the only brightness slider there is is for colour enhancement and if i slide that the screen looks horrible.

Interesting, on my Broadwell rig there is no apply button; brightness changes immediately when i move slider.

Judging from the screenshot you have SONY VAIO?

Probably you find help at: https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/support-info.pl?info_id=1584 Sony eSupport - Electronics - Windows 10 Information for Sony Products

Hello purplesandy,

Thank you for contacting the Intel community.

Unfortunately Windows® 10 is not supported with this graphics version but you can try Stefan3D suggestion and hopefully that can help.

Regards,
