Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 reaches only 300mbps under Linux

Hello Summerborn,

The difference you noticed is due to the specifications and the type of networking standard supported by the access point and the wireless adapters. This is not a problem, nor a limitation of the Operating System.

The Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 has a maximum speed of up to 867 Mbps, enabled by 2x2 802.11ac implementations.

The 2x2 specification of this adapter means it uses http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/sb/cs-025345.htm MIMO technology and that it has 2 antennas, hence, it supports 2 data streams.

The actual speed will depend on the WiFi standard used in the network, the max speed requires wireless AC, however, the adapter can also work with IEEE 802.11abgn, 802.11ac, 802.11d, 802.11e, 802.11i, 802.11h, 802.11w.

In your case, the adapter seems to be operating in 802.11n, the throughput of each data stream in Wireless N is 150 Mbps. Since the AC 7265 has 2 data streams, it will have a maximum throughput of 300 Mbps when operating in 802.11n.

The adapter in your Macbook is probably 3x3, supporting 3 data streams, for a maximum of 450 Mbps in 802.11n
