HP SPECTRE 13X2 PROBLEM 8/21/2014

This exact verbiage will be posted on the following web sites: Hewlett Packard, Microsoft and Intel.

I purchased this model on Feb. 16, 2014 and to this date with Many attempts through online computer take over with HP tech's, Microsoft store here in Hawaii and communication with Intel through their web site to address a problem that has been happening since I purchased this, DISPLAY DRIVER HAS STOPPED RESPONDING BUT HAS RECOVERED pop up window keeps appearing after waking unit from sleep by opening the lid.

Problems were Battery # 2 in the docking station keyboard died and would not charge, I returned the unit to Microsoft in Honolulu.

I received this Specter13x2 back from Microsoft on 8/11/14 after they and HP had it for 3 weeks.

So Microsoft has the unit for 1.5 weeks and tells me that they have done extensive testing and virus checking and found nothing and had to send it to Ohio for repairs. Ohio has it for 4 days and sends it to HP in Tenn. To repair the battery. HP has it for 4 days and from the Account Manager that I was communicating with for HP, was informed that HP in Tenn. Replaced the battery and did "Extensive data testing and returned it to Microsoft. Microsoft has it for another 3 days and returns it to Microsoft Honolulu. They have it for a day updating ALL the drivers and software to the most current.

I receive the unit back and the battery is charging and shows the amount of charge and the pop up Display Driver Still continues to pop up, screen turns black, then flashes the color of my start screen, then goes to my desktop page, this all taking about 3 to 4 seconds. Then the pop up window indicates the driver has stopped working. Then the system operates fine.

I have contacted Intel through their chat and problem solving page, they have sent me links to update my HP Bios and for Intel's display driver, that when I tried the link and it downloaded, I was prompted that the driver I was told by Intel would work on my system, prompted me that it was Not compatible with my system.

So, does anyone have a solution for this? Is this a problem with all the SPECTRE 13x2, or just the one's with windows 8.1, or Intel's drivers? I need help PLEASE.

Hi Norman

What is the version on the graphics driver on your system? Has the issue occurred from the moment you first started using the laptop?

On the HP Spectra 13x2, HP uses a highly customized Intel HD Graphics driver specific to the system due to it's 2 in 1 configuration (Laptop + Tablet). I would strongly advise only using the specific drivers supplied by HP (http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdHome/?sp4ts.oid=5449289&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3DswEnvOID%253D4158%257CswLang%253D%257Caction%253DlistDriver&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken# Driver - Graphics here) due to these customizations.

Using the generic Intel HD graphics driver on the Intel Download Center would overwrite the HP customized driver and would result in functionality issues.

If the latest Intel HD Graphics driver , (version 0.18.10.3277 4 Oct 2013), from the HP Support site is the one that is installed, then it is possible that there is a issue with the laptop itself and needs further investigation by HP. I would recommend contacting HP support directly.

Thanks

Robert

Hi Robert,

I just downloaded the driver you indicated. After the restart, and putting the system to sleep, when I opened the lid, same issue. If nothing further from Intel, then I will proceed with HP. Thank you for your help.

Regards,

Norm

Hi Norman

You could try the generic Intel HD Graphics driver to see if impacts the issue, it would be a good data point for HP support if you end up calling them. And you can roll back to the HP driver if there are unintended issues from using the generic driver. The latest generic Intel HD Graphics driver is:

32 bit version:

http://downloadmirror.intel.com/24224/a08/GFX_Win7_8_8.1_32_10.18.10.3910.zip http://downloadmirror.intel.com/24224/a08/GFX_Win7_8_8.1_32_10.18.10.3910.zip

64 bit version

http://downloadmirror.intel.com/24224/a08/GFX_Win7_8_8.1_64_10.18.10.3910.zip http://downloadmirror.intel.com/24224/a08/GFX_Win7_8_8.1_64_10.18.10.3910.zip

The steps to overwrite the HP specific driver are as follows.

1. Login with administrator privileges

2. Open Control Panel

3. Open Device Manager

4. Click on "Display adapters"

5. Double click "Intel HD Graphics"

6. Click on the "Driver" tab

7. Click on "Update Driver" button

8. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software"

9. Click on "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

10. Click on "Have Disk" button

11. Click "Browse"

12. Navigate to the folder that you unzipped the Beta Intel HD Graphics driver to

13.Navigate to the Graphics sub-folder

14. Double click the igdlh64.inf or igdlh.inf file <-- depends on if you have 32 or 64 bit OS</span>

15.Click "OK"

16. Click "Next"

Driver should now be installing.

17. If successful, click "Close"

Reboot.

Thanks

Robert
