Intel WiFi Link 4965 - Vista PROSet Software Out-of-Date?

I have a 32-bit Vista SP2 HP Pavilion dv6835ca laptop with an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adapter. I currently have driver version 12.2.0.11 (released 17-Nov-2008), which is the same driver posted on the HP support page <<a href="https://support.hp.com/ca-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-dv6800-entertainment-notebook-pc-series/3672909/model/3695075">here> for my computer.

After reading about the recent KRACK / WPA2 vulnerability I thought it would be prudent to update my wireless firmware drivers, but the Intel support page at https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27049/Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Intel-Wireless-WiFi-Link-4965?product=50566 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27049/Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Intel-Wireless-WiFi-Link-4965?product=50566 shows that the latest available PROSet/driver versions for XP and Win 7 are v15.3.1/13.4.0.139 while Vista has an older PROSet/driver v14.3.0/13.4.0.139 package.

Is the latest v15.3.1 PROSet wireless software for the WiFi Link 4965 currently posted on that support page for XP and Win 7 also available for Vista?

Hello lmacri,

We understand you have some questions in regards to your wireless adapter and the WPA/WPA2 procotol vulnerability.

Since the Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adapter https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000006507/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html has been discontinued, there are no planned software or driver updates. While there are different PROSet/Wireless Software versions available depending on the OS, they all contain the same driver (version 13.4.0.139).

We will check with our additional resources to see if there are any mitigation steps available for your adapter in Windows Vista*. Please bear with us, as there might be some delays due to the US Holiday Weekend.

Best regards,

Hi Carlos A.:

Thank you for the prompt response, and cheers for offering to follow up on my inquiry.

The download page at https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27049/Intel-PROSet-Wireless-Software-and-Drivers-for-Intel-Wireless-WiFi-Link-4965?product=50566 Download Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965 was updated 17-Aug-2017 so I assumed that some of the PROSet / driver packages on that page were recently updated for the KRACK WPA2 vulnerability. I could be wrong about that but I'm wondering now if it would still be advisable to go ahead and update my drivers from v12.2.0.11 to the latest available v13.4.0.139.

My wireless router is a Cisco model DPC3825 provided by my ISP and I'm not experiencing any obvious connection issues with the v12.2.0.11 drivers, but I have no idea if these old drivers are vulnerable to other exploits.

Hello lmacri,

The reason why the downloads for your adapter were updated this last August is because we unified the downloads page for each discontinued adapter. Previous to that, you would've needed to access an individual link for each operating system. For discontinued (also known as EOIS, https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000006507/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html End Of Interactive Support products), the downloads posted are final.

To be safe from this vulnerability one must install the patch from Microsoft* (provided through Windows Updates*), and take actions depending on your wireless adapter (update drivers and software /thread/118740 on current adapters, https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000026033/network-and-i-o/wireless-networking.html disable WoWLAN on legacy Centrino® adapters).

The problem is that your wireless adapter has been entirely discontinued and is no longer applicable for driver/software updates nor support. The same thing is the case for Windows Vista*, which is now entirely discontinued by Microsoft*. Based on these factors, there are no available nor planned fixes for your current computer.

Even this also (Wifi intel 4965 ) has an issue with win 10 the solution is go to adapter setting right click "Change adapter options >Wifi>>properties> configure>advance> wireless Mode> select alternative== if a/b/g is already there then change to b/g, vice versa. do it daily apply then your network is connected. You may see. These Intelians donot have such intellect that Common people have because this is our issue not theirs.
