My i7 4790K have 1.84v core voltage at idle according to CPUID without any overclock, is this normal?

As the title suggested CPUID shows that my 4790K has a voltage of 1.84v when idle, and i have not done any overclock to it yet, this is my first time building a PC so im not sure if this is normal or not. I googled around for a bit and i heard people suggest this is pretty high so i wonder if the high voltage of cpu is the cause of my PC to overheat and shut down/reboot sometimes during gaming sessions? Is this some kind of defect?

Appreciate your helps in advance.

Hi Z28FlyingPenguin,

This is not normal. We have identify some boards come with over clocked settings by default or the BIOS updates are changing these settings.

This may depend on the motherboard brand but most the times the gigabyte boards are the ones with this issue.

My recommendation is to run the latest BIOS update since it should be corrected by the OEM. You can also access the following link to get tested configurations at the BIOS level:

Thank you for your reply,

forgot to mention before that I am using ASUS maximus VII gene motherboard. And I have updated my BIOS but the reading on CPUID is still the same. While i was in BIOS i found out that the vcore is actually lower than 1.2v however when i go into windows CPUID shows the voltage is 1.84 which is the exact value of the initial input voltage shown on the BIOS, I wonder if there is any connections between these readings? And if there is any other software that can help me take readings of the core voltage of my CPU?

I recommend you running the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool. It will let you know if the configuration is correct or if it is not:

sorry for the late reply, and I downloaded the diagnostic tool and the result tells me i passed however there were some unsupported, not found and

not tested, is this mean my cpu is ok?

Depending on the technologies the processor support it will show the result. For example Front Side Bus may not be tested on newer processor since this is not part of the internal processor components nowadays but if it passed then it should be just fine.
