Use SGMII interface on 82599ES NIC

Hello,

I have a PC with the 82599ES NIC and the TE 2127931-1 SFP+ transceiver to allow a 10Gb connection.

For my project, I need to use one of the port of the NIC with the SGMII interface instead of the XAUI one in order to have a 1Gb connection.

From the NIC datasheet (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/embedded/products/networking/82599-10-gbe-controller-datasheet.html Intel® 82599 10 Gigabit Ethernet Controller: Datasheet), it seems that it can be done but I can't succeed to make it work.

Indeed, when I use ethtool, I have the following output:

Supported ports: [ FIBRE ]

Supported link modes: 10000baseT/Full

Supported pause frame use: Symmetric

Supports auto-negotiation: No

Advertised link modes: 10000baseT/Full

Advertised pause frame use: Symmetric

Advertised auto-negotiation: No

Speed: 10000Mb/s

Duplex: Full

Port: Direct Attach Copper

PHYAD: 0

Transceiver: internal

Auto-negotiation: off

Supports Wake-on: d

Wake-on: d

Current message level: 0x00000007 (7)

drv probe link

Link detected: yes

As you can see, there is no 1Gb speed in the supported mode.

Can somebody tell me what I am missing and what should I do to use the SGMII interface ? (note that the port with the 10Gb connection works as expected)

Thanks,

Julien
