As soon as it updates the screen goes black and then will not do anything else but display a cursor.

I go into safe mode and uninstall the driver and it works fine, however it will automatically update again and... Rinse and repeat.

I am not sure what do to, due to a drive, it will blank my system, I can not stop it due to Windows 10 updates and I use this for more than just facebook.

Unfortunately, for some reason that update does not show up in the list, nothing does to be honest, I have tried that numerous times, if I uninstall the driver, i boot in fine and can see windows, however as soon as it checks for updates, BOOOM, that update kills it again.

This is a bit of bull to be honest. There should be an easy way to stop or a fix for this specific driver.

Hello jmheath72,

I understand you get a black screen after Windows* Update installs graphics driver version 21.20.16.4590.

Let me apologize for any inconvenience this issue may be causing to you.

If possible try connecting an external monitor and check if you get or not picture with driver version 21.20.16.4590. If you get picture try installing the graphics driver Dell* has validated for your specific laptop model. You can download it from this link http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=3YDMC http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=3YDMC

You can also try the steps on this other link to prevent the installation of that driver version https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninstall-and-block-updates-and-drivers-on-windows-10/ https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninstall-and-block-updates-and-drivers-on-windows-10/

Fred,

I have tried a separate monitor on the system through HDMI and I get the exact same thing on both screens (Black screen with a movable mouse pointer) when it updates the screen will go black and the mouse pointer is able to move.

I have tried the Block, but most of the time it says there are not updates to see and does nothing for me

Here is how it happens.

  • I am working on my computer and I here a driver install sound
  • My screen goes black and mouse cursor is there and can be moved, but nothing else
  • I restart 3 times and it goes into advanced recovery options....
    • I can either uninstall the video driver OR
    • I can restore to a previous point.
  • Either option will work for about 5-30 minutes and then the update comes in and start the process over again. (See first step in this process)

Hello jmheath72,

I am sorry to hear that the issue still persists.

What if you try changing momentarily the Windows* Update Group Policy to "2 – Notify for download and notify for install", then block just the graphics driver update that is causing the problem, and then change Windows* Update Group Policy one more time to the setting you had previously configured. This link will show you how to do it https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/ https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/
