I/OAT on Windows Server 2016 and SR-IOV Linux guest

If I understand correctly I/OAT technology is not supported on Windows Server 2012 and newer. However I/OAT it's still supported by Linux.

If I use Windows Server 2016 as a Hyper-V host and have SR-IOV and I/OAT enabled in the BIOS, will a Linux guest VM have access to I/OAT technology because SR-IOV gives the Linux VM direct access to the NIC?

Hello gijs007,

I wouldn't really expect that setup that you described to work that way. I/OAT, besides having OS requirements has certain hardware requirements:

System Requirements

Operating System
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2*
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008*
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003* with service pack 2, or with service pack 1 and the Microsoft Scalable Networking Pack* (SP2 has the scalable network pack)
  • Linux*: Enabled in the kernel only as of kernel version 2.6.33
Intel® I/O Acceleration Technology (Intel® I/OAT) capable network connection and drivers

The following Intel network adapters and connections support Intel® I/OAT:
  • Intel® 10 Gigabit AF DA Dual Port Server Adapter
  • Intel® 10 Gigabit AT Server Adapter
  • Intel® 10 Gigabit AT2 Server Adapter
