DVXA2 Intel 8700K 630 UHD Graphics Causing Banding on 4K HDR movies...

Hi,

I've found a serious banding issue (scenes with white clouds show a pink posterization/banding effect) with 4K UHD HDR movies, located the source to be DXVA2 - if I disable H/W GPU acceleration (Native DXVA2) in the LAV video codec, then the banding is gone and scenes look perfectly normal.

I'm using an intel 8700k on-board Intel 630 UHD graphics GPU, tried MB latest graphic drivers and also intel's latest but both exhibit exactly the same issue.

Players -

MPC-BE, MPC-HC Powerdvd 17

Codec's used with MPC variants.

Latest MadVR for HDR passthrough

Latest LAV codecs - all used with UHD playback

Thanks.

Thank you Diego,

The movie I used to test was Interstellar 4K UHD hdr, specifically the ice planet approach and landing scenes that contain a lot of frozen white clouds.

I have also noticed if I try and use DXVA2 copy-back or Intel Quick-Sync the banding/posterisation issue disappears but I have severe stutter and dropped frames instead, Intel Quick-Sync has the worst stutter and frame drops of the two.

Regards.

Hello -Hitman- ,

Thank you for your patience, I really appreciate it.

We have been working with your case in our facilities I regret to inform you that at the moment we have been unable to replicate the actual issue, after troubleshooting with several driver versions and different files to play.

In this case let me ask, are you using any particular codec pack besides the ones that you already shared, per example: CCCP or K-lite?

As well, can you replicate the issue with the following video?

I would like to gather more information about the issue. Please fill out the form that is in the following link and post it on this forum thread:

Hi Diego,

Sorry I had not seen you recently replying to this thread and yes I would like you to investigate further.

I don't have any other codec pack installed, I only use what has been previously stated - Madvr+LAV decoders.

I will test the clip/link you have provided and complete the report form asap and report back.

Kind Regards,

-Hitman-

USING DXVA decoder = bad pixelisation, posterisation/banding between colours

Using new LAV D3D11 decoder = no issues, nice smooth color reproduction between colours

Thank you Diego,

I have updated to the latest Windows 10 Spring update - 1803 and then updated to the latest Intel graphics driver, you provided a link for (driver version 24.20.100.6025), unfortunately there is no change in the DXVA acceleration issue and the banding/posterization remains

Tested as per the Samsung Wonderland demo UHD/HDR clip you provided me previously in this thread.

Hello -Hitman-,

I have been trying to reproduce this issue here in our lab, but I must be doing something wrong since the results I get are very different. Do you mind clarifying a couple of things for me?

These are the steps I am following:

1. Install MPC-BE - I used v1.5.2 (build 3445) beta.

2. Install madVR. - I used v0.92.14

3. Install LAV Video decoder - you mentioned version 0.17 but all I can find online is 0.71.0, is this the right one?.

4. Launch MPC-BE.

5. Go to Options -> Video.

6. Change the Video Renderer to 'madVR'.

7. Go to Options -> External Filters.

8. Click on 'Add Filters' and select 'LAV Video Decoder' then click Ok.

9. Select 'LAV Video Decoder' and change the option to 'Prefer'.

10. Play the sample video.

I guess I must be missing something, and I'm sorry asking for more input from you, but getting a reproducible case is crucial for us to work towards a fix .

I look forward to hearing from you again.

Thank you for your time and patience.

Best Regards,

Ronald M.

Hi Ronald,

Thank you for looking Into this for me!

Firstly, yes LAV is version 0.71, sorry for the typo (to find the version I am using search LAV nightly builds), although the issue should be evident with any 0.71 version.

You need to add ALL LAV codecs - audio, splitter, splitter source and video in the same order - see my settings snip (Note when installing LAV you have the option to install 32 bit and 64 bit, de-select all 32 bit, install 64 bit only!)

In LAV video decoder settings you need to make sure DVXA is selected and all the 4k options....see snips below to aid your settings

In MPC-BE you also need to make sure ALL internal filers are deselected/disabled,( I suspect MPC-be is using internal filters and not the EXT-Lav) and that you are using the 64 bit version MPC-BE x64.

I have snipped all my settings for you to copy, to aid your testing and hope you can now reproduce the issue,

Extended/Secondary display settings (LG UHD 4k HDR Display for playback) are in another snip I have added in another reply as I can only add 5 at a time.

I look forward to your reply!

Thanks.

Hi again -Hitman-

I am following all the steps, but I haven't been able to reproduce the issue yet... however when I compare my setup with the one from the screen shots you kindly provided, I am noticing that there is something quite different in my LAV Video Decoder configuration. See below:

As highlighted, it appears the decoder is unable to access the Hardware Decoder. I'm going to try a few more things and even switch to MPC and our latest driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27847 24.20.100.6136

Thank you for your patience, I'll post more information as soon as possible.

Best Regards,

Ronald M.

Hi again,

I just want to provide a new update. I handed this over to other engineers so they could attempt to reproduce the issue as well, however they couldn't see the issue either.

I know we have a new driver coming up in the next couple of weeks, so please try it out as soon as it comes out (either via automatic Windows Updates or by downloading from our site).

In the mean time, as a work around I'll suggest using the Default Renderer instead of madVR.

Best Regards,

Ronald M.
