RSTCLI64 execution fails on ASUS P10S-V4L motherbord

When I execute the RSTCLI64.exe command as delivered in the package of the ASUS motherboard on the internet I get the following message:

D:\Drivers\IntelRaid\C23x_INTEL_RAID_V4.6.0.1048\C23x INTEL RAID\IRSTe\CLI\x64>rstcli64 -v

Could not obtain system information to display middleware version.

INVALID_REQUEST: Unrecognized command, request was formatted incorrectly.

For complete USAGE and HELP, type: rstcli --help

I installed the downloaded drivers from ASUS, as well as IRSTe software delivered in the driver package frrom ASUS.

What is wrong here, and how can I get rid of this. The GUI delivered with the driver shows correct RAID information. However we use this commandline program to get the status information of the RAID in our own software. We used this in our server PC before with windows 7 but we now have to switch to another PC because this PC not available anymore.

In other threads I see that the program does not work correctly with other versions of the driver software.

Attached find the manual of the motherboard used.

Can someone help me.

Hello JanvanDijk@ASM,

Thank you for contacting Intel® Rapid Storage Technology enterprise (Intel® RSTe) support and in regards to your situation we'll be more than glad to help you; in order to determine which way will be the most appropriate to assist you we'll need that you send us the Technical Specifications of your machine such as:
  • Processor Model:
  • Amount of RAM that you have installed:
  • Number of Storage devices and their capacity (SSDs and HDDs) on your machine:
  • The Drives are used in a RAID (0, 1, 5, 10) configuration?:
  • Exact version of Intel® RST (non-Enterprise) that you're using:
If possible please attach us the LOG Files generated by RSTe, depending on your Windows Version they could be found in the C:\Users\[username]\Intel folder or also you can use the Email option on the RSTe GUI to generate a report for your equipment.

Once you've sent us that information we'll proceed with the necessary assistance and if you have additional details to your case or want to ask additional questions please don't hesitate to contact us, we'll be glad to assist you.

Best regards,

Hello JanvanDijk@ASM,

Thanks for the information you've provided us and in regards to your situation we'll like that you please try using the latest version of iRSTe available here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27308/Intel-RSTe-AHCI-SCU-Software-RAID-Driver-for-Windows- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27308/Intel-RSTe-AHCI-SCU-Software-RAID-Driver-for-Windows-

And once downloaded and installed try to use the CLI again using an Administrator Command Prompt since the permissions given to the application could prevent it to obtain the appropriate information.

We'll like that you please let us know the results and if possible attach the LOG files generated by the software; depending on your Windows Version this files could be found in the C:\Users\[username]\Intel folder or also you can use the Email option on the iRSTe GUI to generate a report of your system.

Also, please remember that if you require more assistance or want to add additional details, we'll be glad to assist you

Regards,

We also found that you have to be administrator to execute this command. After updating the software again before you replied we reinstalled it and ran the rstcli64.exe command without issues. Then I switched to a normal user and executed the command again, and it came up with the message we allready seen:

Could not obtain system information to display middleware version.

INVALID_REQUEST: Unrecognized command, request was formatted incorrectly.

So you have to execute the command with an elevated command prompt if you are logged in as a normal user. I don't like this because our software is running in normal user mode. We now have to write software to elevate the user privileges which has a risk out of the security perspective. This can cause problems in case the software is attacked by a virus.

Hello JanvanDijk@ASM,

Thanks for your reply and in regards to the requirement to run the iRSTe CLI over an elevated command prompt or Administrator User that's an expected behavior since the CLI can make changes to the RAIDs instead of only be able to read the status and information of the RAIDs; and that kind of changes needs certain permissions to work directly over the physical disks.

The iRSTe GUI doesn't have this restrictions as it can communicate directly with the driver with the usage of a System Service that has the required permissions to check status and make changes if necessary.

Also, please remember that if you require more assistance or want to add additional details, we'll be glad to assist you

Is there a possibility to get a readonly version of the program, that only reads the status?

We only use the -I parameter, to get the status information about the RAID. It would be a great help if we could execute this in the normal user mode.

Thanks for the support.

Best regards,

Jan van Dijk

Hello JanvanDijk@ASM,

Thanks for your reply and in regards to your question we actually don't offer a Read-Only version or a trimmed version of the iRSTe CLI since it's intended use it's for servers where GUI isn't available or it's required for scripting purposes.

Instead of this option; you can currently make use of the Storage System Events Detected by Monitor Service (IAStorDataMgrSvc) under Windows* 7; since it'll report the information of the RAID via the Windows* Event Manager.

You can currently check the list of Events reported via IAStorDataMgrSvc in the Appendix B of our iRSTe Technical Product Specification document available here:

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/ssdc/ssd-software/RSTe_NVMeProduct%20Spec.pdf https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/ssdc/ssd-software/RSTe_NVMeProduct%20Spec.pdf

We hope this information will be useful for your situation and also, please remember that if you require more assistance or want to add additional details, we'll be glad to assist you

Chris.

This was already what we expected.

This is not what we need. But with the information we got we could solve the issue in another way.

It still would be nice if we could get a version that runs in user mode for the read-only parameters of the raid status. We now had to make extra effort to get the information an other way.
