vPro Remote Desktop stopped working with new Win10 install

Hi,

I am working on a Lenovo M93p 10A9-000SUS SFF desktop with an i5-4570 processor. The Intel Management Engine is version 9.1.42.

This machine was running Windows 7 with the Intel Management Engine Components 10.18.14.4264 installed. I'm pretty sure that I was able to use MeshCommander to start a Remote Desktop session (though I hadn't done it in a while).

I have now done a fresh install of Windows 10 x64 Enterprise on an empty hard disk. MeshCommander 0.6.3 connects to the machine with no problem, and I can power cycle the machine remotely. I can open the Remote Desktop window, but when I click Connect, nothing happens.

I thought maybe I needed to install Intel Management Engine Components so RemoteDesktop could interact with the OS. However on the Lenovo site, I have not been able to find an installer for Intel Management Engine Components for Windows 10 for this machine. None is offered through Lenovo System Update.

Are there components that I need to install under Windows 10 in order to get Remote Desktop working? If so, what are the components and where do I find them?

Thanks,

Mark

This is a question you need to take to Microsoft. I can tell you that I had problems when I went to W10 with remote desktop. They were the firewall settings, where the inbound Exception Parameters had to have the program specifically set to %SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe . This is on the machine you are connecting to.

This may or may not be your problem. Previously, system would work.

Whatever the case, Microsoft support is your best path to resolution.

Al,

Thanks for your response. I see I need to clarify. The "Remote Desktop" that I am referring to has nothing to do with Microsoft's Remote Desktop protocol or functionality. It is an Intel AMT vPro feature for out-of-band remote control. In fact, it was because the MS RDP was blocked by the Windows firewall that I went to the Intel vPro Remote Desktop as my fallback, but it wouldn't work.

If you haven't seen it, here's what it looks like in Intel MeshCommander:

I'm changing the thread title to further clarify that it's the vPro functionality that is not working.

Hello mcbsys,

Regarding your question, "Problems to remote desktop using MeshCommander 0.6.3".

We are going to do our best to help with your inquiry, but please remember that MeshCommander has limited support from Intel.

But I will recommend downloading the latest version:

http://www.meshcommander.com/meshcommander/firmware http://www.meshcommander.com/meshcommander/firmware

Then ensure to stop Windows Firewall from both systems and also any antivirus software.

Also, I will recommend to also to test a light wait Remote Desktop connection - Intel® Manageability Commander - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/97425/Intel-Manageability-Commander https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/97425/Intel-Manageability-Commander

Also, you could try our latest Management Engine Driver for Windows 10

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27733/Intel-Management-Engine-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-and-Windows-10 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27733/Intel-Management-Engine-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-and-Windows-10

I am also going to double check if we had encountered any other problems with this model CPU and or system manufacturer.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Henry,

Thank you for your message.

To my surprise, upgrading MeshCommander from 0.6.3 to 0.6.4 solved the problem. I can access AMT Remote Desktop without any changes to the firewall or anti-virus. Note that I am using normal MeshCommander software (http://www.meshcommander.com/meshcommander www.meshcommander.com/meshcommander), not the firmware, which requires AMT 11.6 or higher.

What I still don't understand is why a new Lenovo machine has an installer available for the Intel Management Engine Components, but this older Lenovo desktop does not offer that installer. Is this a generic Intel app that I can install on any Windows 10 machine? I found https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27733/Intel-Management-Engine-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-and-Windows-10 Download Intel® Management Engine Driver for Windows 7*, 8.1*, and Windows® 10 but it does not list the 4th-gen i5-4570 as a supported processor.

Here's the app I am talking about in the list of programs on a new machine:

Here is the user interface for that app:

Thanks,

Mark

Hello mcbsys,

I am glad the update of the MeshCommander (not firmware) helped to resolve the connectivity.

For the Management Engine, I will best recommend you to contact Lenovo.

This because their system board might use something additional that is not part of the Intel Driver.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Best regards,

I had already contacted Lenovo before posting here. Unfortunately, I have not had any reply. I will post an update in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-10/How-to-get-vPro-Remote-Desktop-working-with-new-Win10-install/m-p/4133280/highlight/true# M7012 this Lenovo forum thread.

Hello mcbsys,

I really wish there was something else we can do but the processor is out of support and any drivers or software is no longer been supported.

I hope Lenovo can help you with a higher driver.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Hello mcbsys,

Thank you for the response, yes I see that you posted that you used the upgrade for Meshcommander standard and not the Firmware.

I have also contacted the Processor Team and they don't have any option to download the Intel Management Engine Components, and the only option if there is one available is with the motherboard manufacturer. You mentioned before that Lenovo did not reply to your post, again I am sorry but from Intels side I don't have an option to download it.

Best regards,
