i7-8700k wrong CPU temperature reading

Hi,

I've recently purchased i7-8700k + asus Z390-I board. When I set it up I've noticed that CPU temperature in UEFI is displayed as 11 degrees celsius (52 Fahrenheit). It also doesn't happen everytime (so far seems to be random). CPU package and core temperatures are displayed correctly. Board has the latest UEFI version.

To troubleshoot I've picked up a spare collection of parts of a friend - an i3-8100, stock intel cooler, AsRock H310M board.

First I've tried setting my cpu in another board, and the temps displayed fine, so I immediately thought my board was faulty. But then I've installed i3-8100 into my board and the problem was gone too.

1) What is to blame here - CPU or motherboard?

2) How is CPU temperature read?

3) Is there anything else I could try?

Thanks in advance,

Tomas

Hi,

thanks for the answer. I think Z390 supports 8th generation processors out of the box. I am also updated to latest Asus bios and running default settings (no XMP even)
