.i have a dell xps 13 laptop 2018 9370

I have just bought a 144hz 2160 x 3840 32 inch samsung monitor(C32JG50 32).

my questions are

1.can i by any cable be able to achieve 144 hz on any resolution(preferably 4k) on this monitor using my laptop as the main output source without using any external GPU.

2.If No then is there a way of achieving that other than using a external GPU for it.

I have attached the scan report as below.

I need it for watching videos and browsing web.i know extreme but i have used a friends 144hz monitor and i cant go back to 60hz anymore

First of all, Intel HD Graphics can simultaneously support three DisplayPort (DP) 1.2 output streams. By definition (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort), each of these streams is capable of carrying up to 17.28 GB/s of video data. In terms of Display Resolution and Refresh Rate, this means that it can support 2160p (4K, 3840 × 2160) displays at up to 60Hz, 1440p (2560 × 1440) displays at up to 120Hz and 1200p (2K, 1920 x 1200) and 1080p (1920 x 1080) displays at up to 144Hz.

Insofar as cables are concerned, you want to make sure that you purchase HBR2 (High Bit Rate 2) compliant cables. These are often referred to as Certified Standard DisplayPort cables.

If you require higher Refresh Rates, you are looking at going the Thunderbolt 3 eGPU route.

Hope this helps,

Thank you so much for your reply

I cannot get above 60 hz on any given resolution

800 x600 gives me option of 75hz that's it

I am. Using the hdmi 1.4 cable provided by Samsung with the monitor

Could you be kind enough to let me know if there's something I'm missing.

And can you send a link amazon for the specific you recommend

Much thanks

The cables that come with monitors are usually crap. A HDMI 1.4 cable cannot support more than 30Hz when supporting a 4K connection. You want a HDMI 2.0 compliant cable for 4K.

According to what I am reading, your laptop has two USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports on the left and one USB-C DisplayPort port on the right. For these ports, what you want is a USB-C to HDMI adapter with Thunderbolt 3 support that specifically says that it supports 4K@60Hz. Here are some samples I found:

adapter: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Technologies-Type-C-Adapter-15-Black/dp/B01FIVSC6Y

adapter: https://www.amazon.co.uk/LENTION-Adapter-Compatible-Thunderbolt-Chromebook-Space-Gray/dp/B07GJHSNL8

adapter: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adapter-CHOETECH-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook/dp/B07L1GRFWZ

adapter: https://www.amazon.co.uk/KiWiBiRD-Adapter-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook-black/dp/B07DCD8L5P

2m cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/UGREEN-Thunderbolt-Aluminum-Converter-Compatible-Gray/dp/B07925J6GY

2m cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Syntech-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook-Samsung-Grey/dp/B07MNVY275

2m cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/UGREEN-Thunderbolt-Adapter-Converter-Macbook-Black/dp/B07BT5543L

In theory, yes, you can run at 144Hz for 2K connections. I can't promise it will work as I have never tried it (I only have 2160p and 1080p displays and no Dell laptops)

Hope this helps,

P.S. Links are to examples that read as having the support; I can't vouch for their quality (though I trust Plugable).
