It can not create Raid 0 or update HDD firmware through Intel integrated RAID Module RMS3CC080 (disk state: UGUnsp)

Hi,

We would like to update the firmware and Create the Raid 0 VD using Seagate SAS HDD,

But we encounter something wrong:

1. Checking command shows abnormal state. It shows the disk abnormal state (UGUnsp)

by using storcli show all (storcli_show_all.jpg). And it will create failing.

2. Create Raid 0 by storcli add vd command fail.

3. updating the firmware fail by sg tool.

What does the abnormal state mean(UGUnsp)? These HDD are all healthy from Seagate . Please give the idea or help, thanks.

Note:

The detail storcli log in attachment. (Log_Hung.txt)

HDD type:

Hello User15873737757611979935,

Thank you for contacting Intel Customer Support.

Can you please provide us the model of your server board and also let us know if you have tried with a different hard drive?

Finally, please let us if you have tried to create a different RAID type and if so, if you get the same issue.

Best regards,

Hi Sergio S. ,

Our server board is using Intel x86 CPU the attachment is the log of lscpu, lspci, lsusb (log_WBdevice.txt).

And we create the RAID0 RAID1 also failed(log_storcli64_raid0_raid1_created_fail.txt).

We have two batch of Seagate drives to be accessory for server production now;

the SAS_DISK_A(SAS_DISK_A.jpg) is working fine for our previous shipping, and the SAS_DISK_B(SAS_DISK_B.jpg) are our current usage, and they always show UGUnsp state,

And cannot to be created for RAID usage.

The these batch of drives are factory testing normal.

Note:

we also provide the PDLIST information using CmdTool2 .

Hi Sergio,

  1. Linux version:

Distributor ID: RedHatEnterpriseServer

Description:  Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.5 (Santiago)

Release:    6.5

2. SorCLI version:

[root@localhost ~]# /opt/MegaRAID/storcli/storcli64

Storage Command Line Tool Ver 007.0813.0000.0000 Dec 14, Cc2018

root@localhost ~]# /opt/MegaRAID/CmdTool2/CmdTool2 -Version -Cli -a0

MegaCLI SAS RAID Management Tool Ver 8.07.15 Feb 27, 2014

(c)Copyright 2014, LSI Corporation, All Rights Reserved.

3. Why not create raid through SAS expander ?

it's because the limitation of our hardware design (raid controller + end device),

BTW, does this type of raid controller support 4k sector SAS HDD ?

Are Advanced Format / 4K / 512e disk drives supported on LSI controllers?

==> it seems have the same condition with mine.

And i will also try to use other HBA card to do the RAID creation in our factory at the same time.

thanks

Harrison

Hello User15873737757611979935,

I am thinking about the same with the native 4k HDD support on this RMS3CC080 Raid controller. I am trying to find the information about that but still don't have it yet. I will continue researching this. Apparently, UGUnsp means Unconfigure Good Unsupported.

An alternate way to discard this option would be to try a 512 HDD and see if it does not show up as blocked under BIOS.

Something else you could try is to install the Intel RAID web console 3 RWC3 for RAID controller management and check the HDD status.

Will look forward for your updates.

hi Jose A.,

thanks for your reply, and

  1. An alternate way to discard this option would be to try a 512 HDD and see if it does not show up as blocked under BIOS.

==> use 512 HDD will not show up as blocked under BIOS. But this is only for test , not for our shipping requirement.

i don't know is it a incompatible  problem or something mismatch between Seagate 4kn HDD and Raid Module.

2.  Intel RAID web console 3 RWC3

==> i am trying to downgrade and get the related package for our old RedHat 6.5 OS from factory. And will update the result soon.

BTW, i have try to use other LSI HBA Card (LSI 9460-16i), and have the same result. (Unconfigure good, not support) about 4kn SAS HDD(SAS_DISK_B) result.

Hello User15873737757611979935,

We would like to inform you that hat your RAID controller and the expander are compatible with 4Kn drives. That shouldn't be a problem here.

You can find more information here:

Support for 4Kn and 512e Advanced Format Disks with Intel® RAID Controllers:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000024132/server-products.html

In addition to the above, the system should be set to UEFI boot mode, so we recommend you to so by following these steps:

1.  Boot the computer and press the F2 key to start the BIOS setup utility during start.

2.  When the initial window appears, select Setup Menu and press Enter.

3.  From the Setup Menu, select Boot Maintenance Manager and press Enter.

4.  From the Boot Maintenance Manager, select Advanced Boot Options and press Enter.

5.  From the Advanced Boot Options menu, change Boot Mode to UEFI.

6.  Save Changes and reboot by pressing the F10 key.

After following the previous steps the RAID configuration is not going to be done from a Ctrl + R screen but from within BIOS You can find more information here:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000006189/server-products.html

That could be the reason for the UGunsp state.

Please do not hesitate to contact us again if you need further assistance.

Sergio S.
